G'day. Never seen this before.
Anyone seen anything like this? Maybe home made? Could be an interesting project.

Gees, I like that idea. Hadn't seen it before but a quick google shows quite a few images. Here are a couple...

Re: NA / NB targa hardtop roof ??
My understanding is that they aren't a Mazda genuine part, and are custom ones done by owners.
In saying that, there seem to be a few around the world, so it's also possible they were sold by a small shop at some stage.
Mazdaspeed for a short period did sell an odd Targa style part.
I can't read the blurb about it in the catalogue (in japanese), but it appears from the pictures to be a piece that fits where the back of the hardtop does and looks like it may have a roll/fold down window on the back.
the pics don't show any roof panels though, just the rear section.
I can't find any pics of the item on the web, but if I can track down the catalogue at home i'll see if I can get pics of the relevant parts.

The more I look at this, the more I'm thinking I would like one.
It is a bit like having enough suits to wear to work, and having options befitting the circumstances.
A targa top would round out the MX5 'wardrobe' nicely...
> Soft top up > Soft top down > 'Speed Racer' Deck Lid > Hard Top > Targa Top.
I presume that to do the targa top there must be something like another set of lathches / strikerplates in the mid-section join. Looking forward to seeing the catalogue, if'n ye can find it.

Bear in mind the catalogue didnt have any pics of a centre section at all, so i'm not sure it was sold as a "targa" or if it was in essense a very elaborate windblocker.
I'll try and find the book though.
as far as latches, the ones made from OEM hardtops I seen to recall often just use a second header rail on the rear edge (and with the appropriate latches bonded onto the top itself)
