Rust will prolly be found in the most obvious places. Under the front guards, behind the front wheels. The parcel shelf behind the seats is also a common area.
Possibly the lower windscreen surround also, that's if it's had a dodgey screen put in

Main points I'd be looking at:
Bottom of front guards (dirt/leaves collect here)
Around the boot seals.
Bottom of windscreen frame (where it joins to the main car)
Top of windscreen frame, near the latches (drain gets clogged, water collects)
Those are the main points I've seen rust of them, the most common I've seen is the windscreen area. It's just a combination of design, and lack of cleaning (drains) that causes water to collect and rust those areas.

You can slow it down with rust converter if it;s only light, but if it's heavier you'll need it removed.
Removal is usually a matter of cutting the rusted section out and welding in a new patch.
Prevention is to try and keep rust prone areas clear of standing water/dirt, and to every so often give them a spray with fish oil.

Sounds like the car doesn't have a sealed battery.

Don't try and colour paint galvanised steel...doesn't work well.

Hi,
From the photos your car has been repainted therefore you may be in for some more nasty surprises.

Sell it and buy another without rust. When I bought my na my main requirement was that it was rust free which is more important than paint condition.

It does not look very good. What could be done is show it to a body shop and get an assessment of how extensive it is and cost to repair. If its thousands to weld in panels etc in structural areas it might not be a proposition as a longer term. The car may have been in an exposed sea frontage area which takes a heavy toll.

I'm not sure who would buy it, that rust is very evident. There will most likely be more rusted areas too.
