Finding paint

Possible that this is a silly question, but where could one purchase the factory paint? Is it as simple as going to a car spray place and giving them the paint code? In my instance 3L (Silver stone)?

Make sure its Mazda Silverstone.

Honda also have a colour named Silverstone.

Depends what kind you're looking for.

If you want it in a rattle can you're best to go somewhere like autobarn etc, some shops have the gear to mix it up and put it in a can ready to spray.

If you want a tin of paint (to thin and use with a proper spray gun etc) you're best to go to a paint supplier with the details (ie: make, model, year, code)

Just be aware that the paint in the tin may not be an exact match for the car, since the car may have faded etc since it was first painted.
Also remember that you'll need to buy thinner and hardeners for the paint in order to be able to correctly spray it, and have it dry properly (talk to the people at teh shop about that, they'll knwo what sort is needed for the paint you buy)


If you go to a panel shop they won't likely sell you just paint, they make money off doing the paint, not selling it.
Would kind of be like going to Macdonalds and asking to buy some beef mince.

Cool, Thanks. It will be for my nosecone and rear bar when I get around to doing them - Will a rattle can be sufficient for them as long as they're primed correctly?
I'll do a ring around of some autobahns and see what I can find.

Auto paint- best place are outlets that supply to the auto industry ie panel beaters spray painters etc. Eg Body Shop. Advantage they know what they are talking about. If you want to know how to paint with a rattle can do a bit of research eg library- I have read some books which detail the steps. Better to read the book which tells you a lot more than just one aspect of painting.

Priming is needed no matter the method.


You could do a rattle can spray on the bumpers, but it's likely to be more economical to get a shop to do that (unless you've got a compressor and guns)
Rattle cans really do take some skill to get a factory finish, they're designed for touch ups.

The last custom mixed can I bought cost me about $40 or so, for a 500ml can I think. It didn't even do one mist coat on my hardtop. So for a bumper you'll be budgeting for fair few cans. Plus sandpapers etc.


It really depends on the skill level and the quality of finish you'll be happy with.

I've got access to a compressor and guns, so that's no issue. I've never painted bumpers however I've done a bit of spray-gunning in my time.

Not entirely fussed with the quality - even if I dodgy up the job myself, 99% guarantee it would still look better than what is on there now.

I'll get into some reading tonight and start prepping my mind for what's to come.

If you've got access to a cpmpressor/guns etc then I'd recommend it.

It's more stuffing around (thinning, cleaning guns) but it will be cheaper than spraycans, and will give a better result (especially since you said you've got some experience with the guns)


The preparation/masking/priming will be the same for both methods (granted, maybe different kinds of paint/primer)
The rattlecan will be less cleaning and mixing, but cost more and won't be the best result.
The guns will be more cleaning and mixing, but a better result that will probably be cheaper.

They used to have an excellent matching service and supply small or large quantities.
