Fuel cap release

The lever in the center console is really hard to pull but it does open. The emergency trigger in the boot works fine which is making me think that the actual cable is stuffed. Anyone else had this problem before or know how to fix it. Can i use a cable from a bike brake or does it not have the little nobs on either end?
