NC headlight - replace just the lens??

Postby reflex » Tue Sep 27, 2011 2:08 pm

I have a damaged lens on my headlight. Lamps etc not damaged, so i'd like to avoid replacing the whole assembly and just do the lens.
Does anyone know if the headlight is a sealed unit or if I can get a lens only?

Hi Aaron,
MX5 Plus are wrecking NC's ATM, it may be worth sending them an e-mail.
Greg.
When you turn your car on, does it return the favour?

Panelbeaters get broken lights repaired, but I do not know where.

yes they do get them repaired. There was a place called the Headlamp factory and it was around the Mulgrave area if memory serves. A panel beater probably knows who is renovating headlamps.

I've spoken to MX5plus about a replacement unit and they only have the HID versions available so no good for me, so i'm now looking at other options.
The headlight has been damaged by some douche (me) accidentally wiping it over with a rag that had Acetone on it instead of turps, whoops...DOOH! for those that didn't know, DO NOT WIPE PERSPEX WITH ACETONE! DONT DO IT.....EVER!

Anyway, so in speaking to various people, a recurring theme has been the idea of using ultra fine grit wet and dry sandpaper on the damaged lens, to "cut back" the damaged layers, then polish them up to clear again. I've got the meguiars 'plastix' polish which i've used on the headlights in the past and they come up great. But unfortunately the acetone effectively melts the perspex and its gone all rough and cloudy.

So my question is, has anyone ever tried this, or does anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks.

there was a recent very good post about the Philips kit which is readily available. Not sure if it will work for your lense. There are no layers on the lenses- these are injection moulded so it is a thickness ( whatever it is ) of polycarbonate and a hard coating. I think it would be worth trying to repair it as there is nothing really to lose. A 2nd hand unit might then be fall back position.

yeah I wasn't sure how to describe it, so to clarify, yes the acetone effectively ate into the lens.

I agree, the only potential issue is that I have not had any luck sourcing a 2nd hand unit!
