Black goop?

Postby gslender » Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:15 pm

Hi,

Do you know what the black goop is that sticks the door plastic skin protector to the door frame? I've got new ones and wanted to clean off and reapply some new stuff but don't know what this sticky junk is?

It's butyl. A bitumen based product, horrid as all hell.
Most polyurethane, silicone or acrylic sealants will work.

Any solvent will do it. I recently dynamat'ed my doors.
I scraped as much of that crap off with a putty knife, then dissolved the rest with thinners, then gave it a final bath with brake clean.
