Paintjob Poll

Postby GP » Mon Jul 25, 2011 1:28 pm

I'm going to do a repaint on my 5 soon, Should I keep the stoneguard like textured finish on the bottom half of the doors or make it nice and smooth like the rest of the car?

It will only take an extra hour to sand the peel out. I did it. It looks good. See my 150 dollar paintjob thread.

I actually like it in textured black. seems to suit the height of the front and back of the car IMO. The other thing is that if you make it body colour, it will be more obvious that you've resprayed. That might bother you or it might not.

I can only assume that there's a reason why it's textured on the bottom half of the panels - perhaps it's more resilient to stone chips or wear and tear?

The black on my car is only on the sills. The textured section comes half way up the door and is painted body colour.
Are you saying that the black comes half way up the door, Or that only the sills should be textured?
Pretty sure the car has been resprayed atleast once afterall it's over 20 years old :D

The sills are flat black and textured, the door is textured and body coloured half way up. Im suggesting that you leave the sill textured, but smooth the doors. The texture is to hide chips, not prevent them.

Oh okay, yeah, I misunderstood. I would also go with the textured sills but smooth doors.

Also, painting it all (sill included) in body colour makes the car look a little lower. IMO it looks better than the original.
