Window Tinting windscreen / Sun visor removal.

Postby dave2221 » Fri Mar 11, 2011 9:58 am

Has anyone done this?

What i am proposing to do is tint at 10% (very dark) a strip across the top of the windscreen, and remove my sun visors.

Now i am not overly tall, and the section i am proposing to tint is approx 4-5cm thick.

Basically the tint will to from the top of the screen, down to the top of the mounting plate for my rear vision window.

Three reasons why i want to do this....

1. removing the sun visors frees up space, and makes it easier to do the latches up on the roof.
2. with 10% tint i shouldnt need sun visors, but i can still see through it (will just cut the glare out)
3. It will make it harder for theives to see into my car, so hopefully they wont have a reason to put a knife through the roof

As far as i am aware it is LEGAL to tint the top 10% of you screen, as you may notice many cars come standard with tinting up there anyway.....

If anyone has any legal information contrary to that, let me know.

Right found confirmation.....

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi03_rev3.pdf

basically ill copy and past the relevant info....

A tinted or opaque band across the top of the windscreen is permitted providing it is no lower than 10% of the height of the windscreen, and is above the portion of the windscreen swept by the wipers....

Please note this is NSW specific......

I think you can buy the strip yourself from the usual motor parts outlet and you just cut it to size. No idea how good it is or if it will last.

import visors could work, have to scope them out.

going to take them off and just see how i go.

my home work trip is always north south anyway, so i really dont have many issues with the sun.

anyone have any pics of how they differ?

Check the ADRs i read awhile ago no sun visors was a way to breach the law, and could be grounds for a defect.

just check..

been reading up on ADR's all morning.....

i didnt see anything about not having them.

effectivly the tint will act as a sun visor anyway, so i spose i can circumnavigate taht anyway

Using the same logic as a shop that leaves its till open when it is closed to show there is no cash in it, wouldnt making it harder to see inside actually make it more prone to a roof slash? If you have good stuff inside, a thief will do the slash and grab if they like what they see. If you cant see, a thief might slash just so they can see.

I also might have poor logic too. :D
cheers

I will stay with the idea that sun visors are actually functional and useful. Having to fold them down to put up the roof is here nor there

Personally I found them anything but useful in my NA. Folded down they completely blocked my forward vision but flipped to the side to stop the sun coming in sideways they never seemed to really work.

well the beauty of them is, its only 4 screws.

ill take them off today, and give it a go for a few weeks before i buy the blanking plates to cover up the old holes.

and if i change my mind, well its not hard to put even just the drivers back on.

I made my own visor plates out of rubber but i was told by several people not having visors is illegal so i kept them on not wanting to temp fate.

Whether it is illegal to not have visors on i really dont know (NSW), Several people told me it was illegal to drive with thongs on or bare feet, but that's not true Ive found, so who knows. :?

So the question is, given you are allowed a 10% tint on the top of the windscreen in NSW are you allowed to NOT have visors? I highly doubt it.

I've already taken my sun visors out due to the frustration of them falling down and blinding me ever time I hit a pot hole!! It's pretty easy to take them off, just four screws like people have said on here before. When you take them out though, you can pop the plastic bit with the screws in it off the metal rod that holds the visor itself. if you do that, you can then screw in the plastic bits minus the visors.

It looks way neater because you don't have big ugly holes there and you don't have the annoying visor to obscure your vision. Personally I think they're useless since they have the angled bit on the sides, they can't push right up to the glass.

I'm still planning to do the tint you're doing too, just haven't got around to it (have to tint all my other windows too..). It's great Idea though! Put some pics up when you're done.

On another note, can someone please explain to me why the na visors turn to the side windows? There is really no point since the visor sits flush with the roof lol. It can't block any sun on the sides because it doesn't even sit against the window!! I know they redesigned them later on like in the nc's and can only fold forward, but come on!

Well the guy is coming out thursday morning to do the tinting before i leave for work...

I took the sun visors off yesterday, and there is a bit more windscreen available without them

I will be going slightly beyond what i am allowed to do with the tint, as the windscreen wipers come up pretty high (and technically your not supposed to go into the wiper area), but i am seriously talking about 3cm overlap and the very corner of the arc on the wiper.....

also, much easier to quickly put the roof up and down, as it eliminates haveing to flip the visors down beore doing the clips up.... :)

will make sure to take before and after pics :)
