NA8 Mirrors = Can they be resprayed

Postby mazdatenfive » Thu Nov 18, 2010 2:52 pm

Question = Can NA8 mirrors be resprayed?
How = What is the procedure?
Colour = Is it possible to change the colour?
Repair = Can the mirrors be taken apart and if so, how is this achieved?

Yes, they can be resprayed with any colour you like.

As for How and Repairs, I'll leave that to the expert to answer.

Question = Can NA8 mirrors be resprayed? - as mentioned above - yes. If they are scratched down to the plastic be careful in your preparation - some plactic primers don't adhere well to the oem paint.
How = What is the procedure? - Sand surface, prime, sand, base coat then clear - youtube is your friend here - lots of how to videos re painting cars
Colour = Is it possible to change the colour? - must be tasteful - you will look at it a lot while driving
Repair = Can the mirrors be taken apart and if so, how is this achieved? - To take the mirror apart you first have to remove the glass - this is the hardest part. There is a lip all the way around and some sticky white stuff in the middle. Don't rush it, don't use metal tools (I used plastic strips to level the glass off). Behind the glass is one screw in the centre - remove this and the plastic mirror surround comes off. You can then remove the motor unit. Pulling it apart further is something I have not attempted - but I didn't think it necessay in my case. In fact the second mirror I just masked up the mirror rather than remove it.

Managed to remove glass using a heat gun. Now all is revealed.

Wonder where you buy big strips of very sticky double sided stuff.

I sprayed a red NA8 mirror white, but I can't remember if we just sanded it then sprayed, or primed it after sanding. Either way, its still nice and white a couple of years later and probably has the best finish of any painted surface on the car
