Legal Roll Bar - Victoria Specific

Looking to purchase a roll bar for my NB
One of my requirements is to keep the car road legal.
Having read most discussions about roll bars on the forum, a number stating that they must be engineered for use in Victoria.
I found the VicRoads Vehicles Standard Information #28 covering Roll Bars and Roll Cages.
Under the heading 'Introduction' it states
Regulation 819 of the Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 1999 requires that all modifications to a vehicle either have specific approval from VicRoads or be carried out in accordance with guidelines published by VicRoads.
Installing a roll bar or roll cage in a vehicle is a modification.
For the purposes of Regulation 819, this document is a guideline published by VicRoads and consequently, any roll bar or roll cage made and installed in accordance with this document is an approved modification.

From this I understand that if the bar follows the rules of this Vehicles Standard Information sheet, it is an approved modification.
The next clause/concern is half way down the second page.
NOTE: Seat belt and seat anchorages installed as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer must not be used for attaching roll bars or cages or any other fittings.

Of the two types of Australian manufactured roll bars we have the Brown Davis bar Image
(Image Credit to Kula's NA6 build thread)
Clearly shows the seat belt top mount bolt used to secure the bar which would mean it is not in accordance with the Vehicles Standard Information sheet and therefore requiring an Engineers Report.
Second type is from MX5 Plus (Forum Sponsor) (Image from their web site)

This one uses a separate top mount.

Without going into the 'this is better that that', my question is.
Does the MX5 Plus bar comply with this clause in the Vehicles Standard Information sheet therefore being deemed an approved modification.
Thanks

Whatever any of us say, it will only be our opinions (and then maybe not Vic specific).
I would ring BD and MX5plus and ask them directly. They can point you in the direction of an engineer if you then require a certificate. Problem is, a cert will probably be over $500 alone.

If VicRoads are the authority on the subject, then you should print the photos out and bring it to them for confirmation. If approved, get it in writing (permit?). Both insurance and the police will be satisfied if they have queries.

I know that both the guys at MX 5plus are engineers and don't like the seat belt mount to be used to mount the rollbars, hence thats why theirs is different.
As to whether it complies with Victorian requirements you would have to check with Vic Roads.

I have one of their bars, and are very happy with it, I also had to get an engineers certificate for QLD RTA, which they supplied after inspecting the installation, so there was no drama's there either way. But that was in QLD

Good luck with the research

Yes, the MX-5 Plus Torque Box roll bars comply with this clause. This detail was a key part of the functional design.

Yes Dweezle there is a version of the TB single hoop that has a single diagonal which meets the prescriptive requirements of the CAMS manual and is therefore eligible for CAMS approval. I believe "rain902" has already been through the exercise. For more information regarding the single diagonal TB roll bar send an e-mail to parts@mx5plus.com.au.

Thanks for the clarification orx626.
Makes a fair bit of difference in the total cost of a 'Legal" bar in Victoria as you would avoid the engineering requirement for the Brown Davis bar.

Hi Stan, without having investigated each of the states policies on roll cages/roll bars, I wouldn't be surprised if this particular clause exists across the board.

This clause certainly exists in the NCOP (National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Modification) which was developed to have a standard set of prescriptive and performance requirements for light vehicle modification no matter what state/territory you reside. To my knowledge not all states have adopted the NCOP in full, because if they did, there would be no need for their respective state divisions! :? So I don't think that we will ever have a standard set of rules Australia wide. :x

Cheers,
Danny

I'm more than happy for anyone who knows the correct answer to jump in on this.

I have asked a couple of people (who should know) if a NON CAMS Approved Bar, fitted to a road registered vehicle can be used at a CAMS speed event.
So far I have received a couple of conflicting answers and no one could provide a reference.

With regards to club track days (eg. MX5 Club of Queensland).....you can run without a roll bar anyway...AASA do not demand that one be fitted. With regards to CAMS sanctioned events where the vehicle you are racing must have a CAMS log book, you will not be able to run with a non-CAMS homologated roll bar or roll cage.

Danny

I think you mean " you will not be able to run without a non-CAMS homologated roll bar or roll cage"

Not sure I get what you mean....if you have a CAMS log booked car, the roll bar / roll cage must also be CAMS approved.
