Gday,

Just got my 2001 MX-5 during the week. Super excited!

It's black with tan leather trim - including seats, part of the steering wheel, parts of the door trim and the carpet is a tan colour also.
Even the cover that goes over the roof when its down is tan. I'm guessing this was a factory option (dealer fitted) when new.

The drivers seat has a minor tear in it and a few creases that will graduate to tears in time.

Been to a few motor trimmers around where I live (SW Syd) and all say that I'm better off doing both seats for colour matching purposes. (I agree)

Some even suggest redoing the whole interior. (not sure if I agree)

I've been quoted up to $2500 for the complete recovering of the seats only.

I'm thinking this is pretty steep, would you guys agree? Can anyone recommend a motor trimmer who produces quality for a reasonable cost? I'm prepared to pay for a good job.

Any thoughts on this would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Villa

There was a post a while back (around October) on a group buy for leather seats in Sydney and I think they were around $600.00 fitted for two, I have attached the link I hope it helps, I think the place was in Silverwater or around that area.

Badbong was the one that organised it.

For fabric trim Mazda sell replacements for seat and backs and presumably they do the same for leather. If so the easiest and arguably the best approach is to keep the car original and replace the worn parts. It is not a hard job with the fabric and presumption is that leather has the same fixing system. I just replaced a fabric cushion drivers side ( 2001) and very pleased with the result - colour difference is hardly noticeable. If you diy you also get the job done when you want it- trimmers like many others often get sidetracked.

You should be able to see how much if any the seats have faded by checking say the cushion sides. Perfection in cars often comes at a high price. I suggest get some prices from Mazda - even if it has to be ordered you car is not sidelined

If you use a Mazda OE seat trim it is likely to be well made and of good quality- ie another 8-10yrs?

What is your approx location.

Hey Mr M
I have the same vintage car as yours, if its not to imposing, what sort of money were Mazda asking for the replacement back.
Thanks

Thanks for your replies.

I'm in the camden area.

I'll probs get it done by somebody, rather have it done properly than face having to look at something day in day out that I cocked up.

Your quoted prices are way over the top.

It should be around the $1100 - 1200 mark for full leather seats and door inserts.

The Mazda leather seats only came with the seat face in leather and the sides and backs were in vinyl (Maztex).

Try Blackman's at Caringbah or Doyles at Auburn who did mine.

You have an interesting colour combination. It is very popular in the US, Black & Tan.

It's most probably after market, as it wasn't a Mazda option in an Australia or you have an import from Japan.

It sounds like a Japanese Import (but being a 2001?)
