Removed windblocker, now I miss the storage net

Postby Quicksilver » Thu Aug 27, 2009 8:08 pm

Got the MX-5Plus twin hoop roll bar put in a couple of days ago and very happy with the unit and installation at MX-5Plus in Geebung. :D

Problem now is without the NB windblocker (which I will replace with perspex sometime soon), I have also lost the handy net storage. I used the net for hats, water bottle, portable radio on club runs etc. Has anyone found a suitable replacement?

I thought of using a couple of bumbags strapped around the bar hoops but that might not work once I have the perspex there. Maybe someone has found something better. Any ideas?

There's actually an OEM satchel that clips onto the parcel shelf carpet clips (where the shelf carpet overlaps the rear-vertical carpet). Rare though.
You can simply buy a cheapy satchel, cut two holes on the backside of it and fit it.

I've also seen something that is velcroed on the middle section, between the seats, over the centre console.

not sure if you can picture it, but you know there are some round clips where on the back shelf, which I believe is for the tonneau cover.

Well you can attach this to it instead:

That looks pretty good philz. Any idea what they're called and where from?

the Japanese pouches at $100 each are far too expensive. I'm sure Benny could make something up but I'm now thinking of getting a couple of these behind the seat thingies and mounting them under the roll bar. They are $30 each. They can hang a little low ( errr... the errr.... pouches that is  ) to give some seat back room but I am a small bloke so my seat doesn't have to be all the way back anyway. Anyone seen anything better?

some really good suggestions. I have 2 rectangular bags with a carry strap which I merely drop behind the seats and street directory etc is tucked out of the way. These bags are not bulky and therefore do not restrict rear movement. You do not see them so colour and match does not matter. To get them out I just grab the strap and I leave them permanently in position. The op shops have heaps of bags at virtually no cost and a dig around might get you the right bag. The carry alls shown in the photo are good but you would have to remove and put in the boot on leaving the car- at least with top down.

I actually modified the wind blocker to sit in front of the rollbar. It does reduce rear travel of the seat but that doesnt effect me. Didnt take much effort and im pretty sure its 100% reversible.

Basically you remove the 2 metal brakets at the ends of the rollbar, you drill out the holes inside which allows the brakets to sit in closer thus allowng the wind blocker to fit between the roll bar. Then just get a self tapping screws to put it in place.

Sounds like a good plan kitkat. I gather the windblocker sits in front of the rollbar and remains in the upright position. If it is above the base of the rollbar, is it too high for good vision through the mirror? Could you post some pics of your setup?

Yep, thats correct. Full time up and in front. Doesnt effect visibility at all and the only thing that is made slightly more difficult is the raising of the roof.

Just remembered i have pictures from when i ooriginally installed it...

Hi Quicksilver, I have the same double hoop roll bar as you, and are looking at doing something with polycarbonate, but in the interim have a look at this.

Now bunnings sell the plastic that you make those cafe blinds out of for $29.00 a meter and it is 1mm thick and 1370mm wide, maybe you could make up something similar out of that. They sell it buy part meter also so it might cost you $20.00 and a bit of time with a neddle and thread.
Hope this help

Certainly a lot of options possible. Not keen on the mesh looking one in the photo - that's more like a windfilter :D

I found on the net quite a few polycarbonate units made in Europe or USA (Google windblocker - there's heaps of 'em). Based on those I got a signmaker I do some business with to quote to laser cut 6mm acrylic to shape with some mounting holes and put on some "Quicksilver" artwork. Came to a tad over $200 including artwork.

Also looking hard at kitkat's handiwork re-mounting the original unit - might be worth having a go.
