i don't think it should be a problem unless you have track days, or it is a very hot day..

As sliq said, it shouldn't be problem as a daily driver even in summer. Though if you turbo it and the like, I'd be moving it out of the way.

I have a slimline mounted in the nose and have had no probs.

It should be fine for daily driving, but why make the car have to use the fans more or run even hotter.

I've seen bog standard MX-5s with the same plate location as yours overheating on the track but once the plate was moved they ran fine all day.

Just move it out of the way, seems like a no brainer to me.

ive had mine on the track with the plate in that position. ive ran all day without any problems

There's no doubt that's very possible, but why risk the chance it gets too hot?

Should also note that the NB temp gauge is more of an on/off switch than a true temperature gauge.

I have had problems with overheating, hot summer night + blocked airflow = bad.

Just get a mx5plus number plate bracket, They sit the number plate above the bumper opening. For $30, they are good insurance.
