I've just been to look at an NB today that I'm quite keen on, but it did have a wood effect centre console and vent rings that weren't really to my taste.

I was just wonder if anyone knows how hard it is to remove these? Are they just stick on veneers, like the ones you see on flee bay, that can be pulled off or would they need to be replaced with regular black ones?

Would be good to hear is anyone else has done this.

There are two types of these type of trims. There's the stick-on style you mentioned, where it simply sticks on-top of an existing trim using a very thin double sided tape...

or

...there's the other (more expensive) kind, where it actually replaces the OEM trim. You need to closely look at the trim itself to figure it out. It should be easy to spot.

In my NB8B the brushed aluminium vent rings that I have are simply an alloy stick-ons. But the ones in my NA8 looks like they replaced the OEM black plastic trim.

most of the walnut/timber trims in cars is just a print over plain plastic, you should just be able to either strip/sand it and paint over as you would any other plastic.

or you could just buy normal trims off someone.

either way, little bits of walnut trim wouldnt be a dealbreaker if the rest of the car's in good condition.

The centre console piece in the original black can be purchased from Mazda for roughly $80 new and MX5 Parts UK have brand new eyeball vents for 25 pound each. So absolute worst case scenario would be $300 to get it back to standard if you simply replaced the parts with new. Painting plastic dash trims can be a royal pain so I'd personally be happy to avoid the hassle and spend the cash

Hi Hammer the aluminium rings (stick on) in your clubbie were part of a group buy (Boags) way back when i owned it unless you had changed them. T

The effect is likely to be a stick on trim. Suggest living with it for a while before jumping in-ones I have seen in wood effect look very good but tastes differ.

No, I haven't The trim is as it was when you owned them. They're very good quality, nicely shaped and thickish. Much better than what Mazda used on my SP - even though on my SP where also real aluminium trims (and not vinyl look-a-like).

I've ended up going of that car so I'll probably leave it and see if it grows on me for a bit, if not I might get all hairdresser on it and see if comes off. If it all goes wrong I guess I can replace them as mentioned.
