I'm in the middle of doing mine at the moment. The cable is 1 piece which wraps around a spindle in the motor so It's pulling the window up as well as down. The end pulled off mine but if the cable is actually broken off you will need to replace the cable as it will be too short.
The main problem I've had is that the cable can double over itself in the motor which means pulling it out again.
If your not short of money I would pay someone to do it

There are two cables per side - one for up and one for down (unless there are different designs).
I got mine done a 3 or 4 years ago at Mania and it wasn't expensive. After seeing how fiddly it was I'd say it was the best option.

Pulled the lot out on the weekend and rewound the cables (Yes there are 2 of them) onto the spool and refitted. While out I lubed the cables and regreased the worm and worm wheel, I am blown away with how fast the window goes up and down now. Will be doing the passenger side next weekend, Thank god it's a 2 door

You could just swap the wires around going into the window switch and fix the problem in a couple of minutes.

did it but it was time consuming - i was originally told you had to buy the whole window mechanism, but was able to buy the cable from mazda, & eventually did both sides on my old na6 after they went about a year apart. from memory (it was 10 years ago) the main problem was getting the new cable to wind around the wheel tightly enough to fit the winder mechanism back together.

I've had a go at it and ended up buying second hand a whole new assembly (manual winders). However I had the winder mechanism itself break and you cannot buy these seperately, only the cables (auto and manual winder window cables are the same). Very fiddly job and good luck with it!

Done it. Very doable, but damned if I remember any of the specifics.
