Hey everybody,

It seems the search functions is buggering up...

Can anyone point me to the topic that discussed the problem with the interior overheating? i vaguely recall reading something about sticking some insulation on the firewall...

Any ideas?

Cheers.

on top of the firewall there is a rubber seal that is meant to seal the engine bay from the area behind it (which is where your interior air intake is).

this gets compressed over time and becomes less effective. phil (manga blue) was talking about this recently and he said he has ordered a new one. like you, i'm also waiting to see phils' results as i have the same problem . (air coming into cabin is very hot)

cool cool thanks Fatty.

I read somewhere also about the insulation on the firewall... have you heard of that? I wonder how much difference it makes...

hmmmm, from memory i think maybe it was garry who had been playing around with insulation on the firewall in his SP ??

I can vouch for re stuffing the insulation strip in my NB8A. Made a world of difference.

It's not so much that over time the strip compresses. It's more that the strip Mazda put in is just hollow and transfers heat very easily.

I went to Clark Rubber and got them to cut me a strip of foam about 1cm in diamater and just stuffed it into the hollow strip.

The car still overheats, but only if I'm in traffic. As long as you're on the move, there's no problems with outside air coming through at the outside air temperature.

Another possibility is that the upper and/or lower gear stick boots have split which can let heat from the grearbox/engine into the cabin.

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Do you mean the vinyl boots have a crack in them, or is it something I'm not getting?

Juffa is talking about the two rubber boots that are under the console. They develop cracks/tears over time, and let in heat from the gearbox oil.

As for insulation, I have been looking at installing some Fatmat into my car. It is similar to dynamat where it is a sound suppressor, and also an insulator for the car. So it keeps the heat out in summer, and the heat in during winter. It is also supposed to do wonders in illiminating road noise, etc.

Mx5 install..

Ahh right. Might check those out at some stage as I can get a fair bit of heat coming through the gear shift.

Always worth a check, ours has gone through 2 outer boots and one inner so far.

I tried the insulation inside the rubber seal trick and didn't find it particulary effective. I lined the leading edge of the air plenum thing with some 10mm thick grey insulating foam and that seemed to work at lot better while the car is moving at least. The incoming air still heats up when stuck in traffic though.

Some bodgy pics here

Yep, I tried that foam thingy...even a rubber version of it that make the rear of my bonnet bulge a bit

Still hot...I just accept it

What do you think your air conditioning is for?

Taking what little power the engine has and strangling it. :D
