Car Got Keyed - Any pointer on paint restoration

Tried writing this before but it never showed up so im writing it again. Delete if its a copy.
The five got keyed today at uni. I dont understand this kind of vandalism. It is pointless and you get nowhere doing it. Scum of the earth sort of thing (still fuming about it, can you tell?)
Anyways, the gouge is about 40cm long and goes down to bare metal for about 5cm. Have got touch up paint and have filled the gouge so that it is higher than the panel surface. Just wondering what to do next. I was thinking about getting some wet and dry and working up the grit levels till it was shinny and smooth (1000 - 8000grit).
Any pointers?
Thanks in advance,
Jimmy
