Painted callipers/rotors

Postby robbiew » Wed Mar 21, 2007 10:50 pm

Sitting pondering after cleaning 5 weekend.... Noticed that rotors/hub are in shabby condition.....rust etc. Can you paint them, swept area excluded, and is black the right colour, or will they retain heat . Same question for callipers

you can paint them but you need to get the proper paint, has to be heat-proof

you can buy the caliper paint at most auto shops.. i used VHT and havent had a drama. but there are some that are better than others.

its rather simple to do just make sure you clean the areas to be painted well with something like metho first and then cover everything you dont want paint on carefully.... and be mind full of over spray

colour wise is personal preference as theres a huge selection of colours just pick one that goes well with your car or if you have a bit of time on your hands you could do what i did and put a logo on their 8)

theres a bit of a guide on how i done it on my cardomain site as afew people were asking how to do it http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2146032/7

takes a bit of extra time... but i think it was worth it.

very easy DIY job....
main things is to CLEAN THE CRAP out of the calipers....
and when applting the spray, apply several LIGHT COATS! not one thick coat as the paint tends to peal off when its thick.

\"Brake and Parts Cleaner\" works well. Comes in a spray can from the likes of Repco.....

Just noticed your comment on painting rotors and thought I would just let you know along with everyone else of a problem. There is no problem with painting them it comes later when you want to sell your car and need a RWC for the RTA. I just sold my WRX that had painted calipers but couldn't get a RWC because of that. It appears VicRoads has a new rule in regards painted calipers etc when it comes to wanting a RWC. I got it off but it was a bitch. Had to use paint stripper from the local auto paint shop along with my high pressure cleaner. I got the RWC

Interesting. Did a quick google search and a number of other people have had the same issue when getting a road worthy inspection or getting an compliance inspection because of a canary (defect notice), in Victoria.

painted calipers are not a defect. myself and many other mates have gone through many defect stations on random roads and NEVER had an issue. if someone defects u for this, they r in the wrong.

use a wire brush to clean the calipers. they come up a treat and let the paint hold onto the caliper for a much longer time. Patience grasshopper when cleaning otherwise the paint will start cracking and peeling off after a few months.
