Alot of people say to put a hook behind them and give them a good yank, but I found the easiest way is to use a screwdriver. Just push up on the vent at twelve o'clock and insert a very thin screwdriver wrapped in a cloth at six o'clock and just lever out. I've done mine many times like this and it takes 10 seconds. Good luck.

Two bits of anything thin, be it screwdriver, metal, whatever, placed in at 9 and 3. This pushes the clips down that hold it in. Then it's a matter of yanking it out with a bit of force. Coat hangers work well for slotting into the vents themselves and give you decent pulling power.
Where in the hills are you? I can give you a hand if you want, having done it to my NB once before.

next time, cloth over the vent, then use pair of pliers (cloth prevents scratching the vent)... they pop straight out.
