NC front licence plate holder – a monstrosity

Mazda Australia and dealers, surely you can do better than this revolting article. It’s not as though it’s hidden behind the licence plate
I am dismayed that Mazda dealers fit front plates in such an unsympathetic fashon – leaving 20mm or more of that hideous plate bracket showing above the plate.
It’s bad enough having a repulsive plate holder riveted to the bonnet of an otherwise good looking car without showing excess plastic around the plate.
Or is it just that WA plates are smaller than those used in other states? I wouldn’t have thought so. Standard WA plate size is 372 x 134mm and custom plates also come in 315 x134mm and 190 x 134mm sizes.
I’m surprised that Wheels magazine hasn’t made comment about this in their many gushing reports on the MX-5, including their 2006 Automotive Design Award which was won by the MX-5.
My first job when I get my '07 Coupe on Tuesday will be to remove, with a jig saw, the excess bracket that will be showing around the plate, without removing the paintwork .
The dealer is installing a ¾ size custom plate which has been removed from my former car.
After that, I will replace the 18 year old orange blobs forward of the doors with clear lenses (on back order from Mania) - as seen on the new Limited Edition, and de-badge the Mazda name to tidy up the rear.
Then there will be external design perfection .
