NC front licence plate holder – a monstrosity

Postby BobB » Fri Feb 23, 2007 2:39 pm

Mazda Australia and dealers, surely you can do better than this revolting article. It’s not as though it’s hidden behind the licence plate

I am dismayed that Mazda dealers fit front plates in such an unsympathetic fashon – leaving 20mm or more of that hideous plate bracket showing above the plate.

It’s bad enough having a repulsive plate holder riveted to the bonnet of an otherwise good looking car without showing excess plastic around the plate.

Or is it just that WA plates are smaller than those used in other states? I wouldn’t have thought so. Standard WA plate size is 372 x 134mm and custom plates also come in 315 x134mm and 190 x 134mm sizes.

I’m surprised that Wheels magazine hasn’t made comment about this in their many gushing reports on the MX-5, including their 2006 Automotive Design Award which was won by the MX-5.

My first job when I get my '07 Coupe on Tuesday will be to remove, with a jig saw, the excess bracket that will be showing around the plate, without removing the paintwork :? :? .

The dealer is installing a ¾ size custom plate which has been removed from my former car.

After that, I will replace the 18 year old orange blobs forward of the doors with clear lenses (on back order from Mania) - as seen on the new Limited Edition, and de-badge the Mazda name to tidy up the rear.

Then there will be external design perfection :P .

i think its amusing that mazda states that the only part still in use from the orig design is the \"egg yolk\" blinkers...

Yet its also the part which so many people want to ditch!
PS(my clear bits should be here in the not too distant future!)

I think someone else on here did a write up on how to rid the NC of the horrid plate at the front.. dont know who or where though..

A few owners have drilled out the pop rivets and I think there's 2 nuts/bolts as well from memory. Yes it is an awful design, I wonder if it's made for the euro plates instead? :?

actually interesting you say that sabre, the answer is no, i won't defend the NC any longer, i don't need to, the car defends itself, the constant stupid & inane criticisms ppl make about the new gen MX5 is laughable at best & mainly based on ignorance, they have no idea, so they make something up to justify their baseless comments.

now, i'm a sh!tstirrer, always have been, & as such, i expect to cop it in return, which i do & have no problem with that, but i despise petty stupidity & ppl who flap their gums just for the sake of being heard.

i have never, & will never, criticise anyone elses car, because i'm a great believer in personal preference, it's your car, you can do what you like with it, however, IF you ask my advice or opinion, you WILL get a straight answer, whether you like it or not.

for me, it's very simple, you either like the NC or you don't, if you don't, shut your mouth & keep driving what you drive.

if you DO like it, i would highly recommend saving up your $$ & investing in one, you won't be disappointed.

if you DO buy one & want to modify it to your tastes, go right ahead, but don't you DARE put sh!t on me because i'm happy with mine the way it is.

for the most part, i really enjoy this board & all its varied members, at other times, i wonder why i even bother opening the page, this happens to be one of those times, ALL of BobB's threads to this stage have been meaningless IMO, passing judgment on a car you haven't even spent 5 minutes enjoying yet is pointless, i have to seriously question why he even bothered to buy one, in fact i question whether he HAS bought one at all to be quite honest.

to all those members here i like & indulge in light banter, please disregard this post, it is not aimed at any of you in any way.

sorry Geoff, for using your post to unload with mate, i'm sure you understand :)

You've taken it very well, AJ, and I agree the whole gag is wearing a bit thin. I don't even own an NC and it pisses me off too.

Before replying to AJ, I seriously considered if I should be providing him with additional oxygen.

There has never been a car produced that hasn’t had some negative points. And what a simplistic world this would be if we only liked or disliked something with no in between.

And what a boring forum this would be if the only views expressed here were those acceptable to AJ et al. What a pity if members ceased making negative comments about the MX-5 on this forum because they might invite denigration and comments that could also be defamatory.

Intelligent comment by a member presenting an opposite viewpoint to another member’s post is I’m sure, welcome by most.

as i stated bob, it is only witless comments that burr me up........such as the title to this thread.....& others you've started.......there's one or two of us that have had these cars for a while now & already sorted what you consider are heinous crimes  .....for instance:

Image

this is our car, & yes, it still has the original number plate mount on it, i never had a problem from day one, because our dealer, when mounting the personalised plates, simply trimmed the holder to fit, without being asked........ either this dealer cares about all the cars they sell, or they appreciated a customer who didn't come in loaded up with attitude, either way, i had no need to post inane crap like you about an insignificant problem :)

& ta for the offer of oxygen.......NOS would be better tho

AJ, you have missed the point about the oxygen, but I won’t bother explaining  .

At least the title of the post got noticed.

Nice pic though.

I will post a pic of the front of my ‘imaginary’ Coupe with custom plate attached when I work out how (to attach the pic that is...not the plate) :? :? :? .

no, i didn't miss the point of the oxygen bob, i just chose to ignore it, big difference, as i'm sure a man of your learning is aware

i await the photo with high anticipation............please feel free to sing out if you need help posting a picture, it is a relatively simple excercise.

This is what I am talking about – and this is a demonstrator car  . What’s more, I have seen worse than this.

Note also the blank spaces visible at the top on the bracket underneath.

As I say, a blight on the aesthetics of a nice nose

Pic of my custom plate to follow after I take delivery next week.

PS Many thanks to the member who posted perfect instructions for posting pics which I copied down (Sorry I didn't record the name).

Yes, it was JBT. Beautifully executed instructions for posting pics – many thanks to JBT :D .

A lazy install? On the demo cars? At the three dealers I have visited? God help the MX-5 owners of Perth if they get their dealers to do something more complicated than attaching a plate.

Bob, you've only been a here breifly but so far, you have started 2 threads about what you DON'T like about the car, and commented in another thread about the sun visors saying they are useless and you don't like them.

you have also had a crack at a forum member who asked a genuine question regarding what RAA is. hell, i didn't know what it was either. not knowing does not make us \"eastern states centric  \" as you claimed.

i gotta agree with AJ, you seem like a bit of an argumentative twat. but hey that's just my first impression. it would just be nice to see a positive post from you every now and then. you can't really blame people for taking a dislike to you when you are 100% negative.
