Do the cut and polish then decide. You might waste the polish, then again, you might save $1000.

I'd get a quote on a full respray first. You'll probably find that it won't be much more to do the whole car when 3/4 of it is being done to cover the repairs anyway. The cost in painting is prep work - masking, rubbing back etc. Less masking involved if the whole car is being done, and you might be able to do some of the prep work yourself - remove polish, light sand perhaps.... Talk to the painter and ask what you might be able to do yourself to save him some time, and you some money. Chances are the paint won't cost anymore to do 4/4 as opposed to 3/4!

I think SLash was saying it's $1000 to get 1/4 of the car resprayed and fix the dings.
Get some prices to get the entire car done, if it's in the same ball park then there's your answer.
Are the dings small dents or just paint chips?

Just pay the $1k and be happy with that I reckon...good respray will be over $3k and if you attempt it yourself you could stuff it up and have to pay more that $3k to get it done right.

Respray the whole car and put some tricky blue/purple interfewrance paint over the gold. Or better yet go full harloquen, never seen that on an MX5 but i reckon it would look seriously trick on an NB...
Failing the copious amounts of cash to do either of the above, i would just spray the single panel, and blend it through (but get a prof. panel beater to do it).
