Hi guys
Im having trouble removing my Nardi woodgrain gear knob from my 99 mx5..... I went to twist it off as ive done on my NA6 and after it came loose it just spins now and wont come off? Ive tried pulling the knob up and twistng hoping it would grab and twist off but no go

seems to be a grub screw in there sumwhere..... Ive also tried to remove (twist off)the crome ring on the bottom of the gear knob but it wont budge.... and thats even with gettin the multi grips on it!!!
Even went to my local mazda dealer and even they didnt know how it comes off
Im at the point that im ready to cut it off!!

hehehehe
If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated
Cheers, Mark.

i have a 99 and mine just twists off!
but i have the standard plastic, sorry vinyl one lol..
mine was a bit loose and to screw it on properly meant it wasnt straight
but when i went back to the dealer they made it straight again.
must have used some loctite or something...
i havent been game enough to find out how they did it yet

I don't know about the construction of the Nardi woodgrain, but I'd hazard a guess and say it's a 2 piece construction and maybe it's separated? Sounds like the knob is screwed, no pun intended!
Have you tried removing it while the car's warm? Maybe a warm gearbox will help warm up the stick and make things easier to remove.

from experience the leather one has a metal part that is glued to the leather grip part. The glue does dry out and will split the 2 parts. If that happens, then some mult grips, will fix that problem. It will make a loud crack like a wheel nut being loosened when it breaks free, then unscrews.

Thanx for all your help guys
In the end i worked out that the nylon inner of the gear knob had broken loose from the metal housing( glue lost its strength )
So i drilled a small hole through the gear knob and into the nylon center and then put a steel pin to lock the two parts together and she came screwing off
Now she has a Trust polished metal shifter(round ball) on it and looks awsome
