5*7 and some 6*8 fit in the plastic adapter plate Mazda use. If you ditch the adapter plate you can fit an 8\" round speaker in. There is quite a bit of depth behind the speaker so you can fit a decent size magnet in there. Best to take the door trim off and have a look for yourself and take a few measurements.
I have 8\" Phillips speakers and they screwed in with no modifications. They even used the same holes Mazda used for the plastic adapters.

I fitted a 6.5' Ecclipse two way, using a custom made MDF backing plate in lieu of mutilating the factory packer... Didnt have to cut any panels either.. There is also plenty of room in the door (probably about 6 inches between the panels, and the window doesnt come down that far)
Only thing to be wary of is that all the door cables run through a plastic plug where they meet the body, not a rubber one like most other cars. hence you cannot simply run the cables though the existing hole. To get around this i cut the wires in the door and removed the doors from the body, pulled out the plastic plug, snipped a small hole in the body just beside the plug just large enough to fit the speaker cabling (if you want to use a decent gauge) through, then reversed the whole process and spliced all the wires back together once the doors were in place...
The end result is a neat job with no ugly holes anywhere and basically a \"factory\" look. FYI the factory speaker wires are not much larger than your standard telephone wires and i have serious doubts they can hack any significant powrer, esp, with 8\" speakers...
A more interesting job is the location of the amplifier... Mines in the boot tucked away in a custom made MDF box on the left side of the boot area where the small plastic bucket used to live (Where the tools used to live).
Either way be prepared for a lot of head scratching and at least a full weekend to do the install properly (took me a full long weekend plus the next two week nights till midnight each night!!!!!)

Ive had 8\" pioneers in for years, I made some thin mdf spacers to help the speaker seal.
