Is it worth getting windows tinted

Postby TheSalamander » Sat Sep 02, 2006 11:10 am

As a new comer to Australia I'm curious as to other peoples views on tinting the MX-5s windows with respect to the sun (rather than \"looking cool\")

Thoughts?

thanks

If you were in Melbourne, no. Cairns, yes. Due ot the amount of sun.

The only problem I have with window tinting is at night and on very dull days, as it just reduces driver visibility (and thus safety).

Hey Salamander,

I've been in Sydney most of my life and there are days you'd wish you had tinting... and there are days you'd wish you didn't (like anywhere really :? )

I don't have tinting and haven't found it huge problem. I just couldn't justify paying so much money to get them done (fancy paying the same to tint the MX as it would to tint a Tarago!?! No Thanks).

Just invest in a coupla comfortable driving shirts (ie long sleeve breathable jobbie) :P

I saw in another post that getting a specialist (rather than Mazda) to do the tint would be around $200... Does that sound right? Useful to know for when the dealer quotes me a price!

thanks

I'd only tint for sun protection, so in Sydney I'd say no.

this summer is gonna be REALLY hot though...
also, is it possible/worthwhile/smart to tint the rear windscreen on a hardtop? i'm wondering whether it would help reduce the effect of headlights blinding me in the rear view mirror. i think the car's height definitely sucks when there's a SUV following.

i got my car(impreza) tinted last summer and it did wonders for keeping the temp down when the car was left in the sun. It was about $265 from memory, i say that it was worth it but you won't get it back on resale

I'd tint for sure; it's sun protection and it makes it harder for people to look inside your parked car.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can get the price down to and probably do it.

As Okibi says, anything you can do to make it more difficult for people to see in is a good thing. It also has the effect of reducing sun damage to upholstery and plastic. IMO the positives outweigh any negatives.

Be a waste of money on my MX5......the windows are always down with the roof :D , that's what MX5s are for.
Oh and you'll find the windows have a slight tint in them standard anyway.
