Best to pop the vents out of the dash and disassemble them before spraying.. well i did anyway.. mind you, you may be able to get a neat job without disassembling them.
I also sanded mine smooth removing the crinkly vinyl looking finish. Very happy with the look! doesnt look full on \"chrome\" more so a shiny satin finish, I actual prefer it to full on shiny chrome IMO.

mmm... was thinking about popping them out, but I didn't wanna yank at the eyeballs unless I really had to. Don't wanna loosen them and all that jazz. That being said, it'd most definitely be much easier to take them out and do the spraying.
Was just wondering if it was at all possible to do a shitload of taping and spray them that way.

Prob not.
Id still pop them out of the dash. especially if you want to sand them.
You dont want overspray mist floating around in the cab anyway.. its not to hard, they're a very snug fit in there anyway, ive taken mine out heaps of times, they're held in with snug metal spring clips.
then tape over the ball vent itself if you dont want to disassemble them before painting.

LOL ... back i say ..back!! ... nice one sharyl, yeah im pretty happy with my unit... i want to upgrade to an mp3 one though! Yeah the side ones come out the same as the centre ones.. I do them all using a bit of coathanger wire in a hook, go inside the vent and hook it behind, one hand on the front of the vent and give it a swift yank.. and it'll pop straight out!

OK guys, let me get this straight...
Are we talking about pulling out the vent (ie the surround) or the eyeballs vets (ie the crosshair round bit that you can move around and what I'll refer to eyeballs from now to really differentiate between the two).
I tried pulling my eyeballs out (
) but it didn't seem to work. Tried it with the coathanger trick, but they seemed awful tight, so gave up. Keep in mind I was yanking fairly hard.
As for the vents, if you get at it with a flathead screwdriver, to the eyeball vents come out with it? I was under the impression there was a screw or something that held the vent in place, and that screw was located behind the eyeball. In other words, you needed to remove the eyeball before you could remove the vent itself.
Suggestions? Corrections?

Got it a few years ago from Autobarn, was like $30 or something... i think .. hang on tick..
cant believe i managed to find it... after like 4 years i kept the bag it came in in my \"box of mx bits\"... its a ford mazda part.
Part Number is B02A-66-9M0A
It doesnt fit straight in mind you i had to make a special mount at the back and shave some the plastic off back of it to make it sit nice. I can take some more photos some time if your really interested in it, just let us know.

The whole thing comes out crosspiece/surround and cup bit that the ball sits in like this...
Then you can if you want remove the front ring to paint it.. thats what did, hoping for a better and cleaner finish. Not easy to get off though.. have to be careful not to break em..

I'll get at it next weekend and start spraying like crazy (heading to the snow this weekend... not in the MX obviously

Right, got a bit industrious over the weekend and pulled the car apart (again). It's definitely getting easier and easier
Anyway, sprayed everything, and it all turned out pretty well. Problem is, I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and am considering pulling it all apart again, sanding everything down (if I scratch the spray paint) and spraying it with a light gloss to give it a slightly more polished look and better scratch resistance.
That being said, the bits I sprayed aren't really all that prone to being scratched. I'll put pics up maybe this weekend if I have time to take pics.

Sharyl, I think your new roof needs a bit of shrinking, not stretching.
