Some advise please for a MX5 newb (immobiliser)

Postby nerner » Mon Jul 10, 2006 10:54 am

Hi All,

I am new to the joys of MX5 ownership (I just picked up my NB8A and loving every minute of it) and was wondering if some of you could give me some advice.

Unfortunately the dealer tells me that the previous lady owner has not been able to locate the owner’s manual so I am trying to work out if the immobiliser fitted is standard or an aftermarket job.

The rest of the car is stock standard with no mods and the dealer was not a lot of help on the immobiliser setup.

The car came with two totally different remotes that engage or disengage the system (One solid blink of the lights or 3 short blinks of the lights).

I do not think it is standard but I thought you guys and gals would know.

Thanks in advance

Bevan :D

Aftermarket I'd say. My NB8B has the factory alarm and it uses the factory remote. Welcome to the addiction! 8)

Welcome,

From my experience with these, the NB8A has a factory immobiliser built into the actual key! To cut new keys, you need to purchase direct from a Mazda Dealer (about $25 per key), get the key cut by a locksmith, then take it back to Mazda to get coded to the car.

Now, because you dont have previous documentation, the Mazda dealer will have to request (from Japan) the code for your car. When you go in initially to get the key, they will need to do this as it takes a few days (there may be a charge?).

It is little bit of messing around but its not that bad.

The Alarm pad will have three blue buttons if it is factory, and will say Mazda on it. If it doesnt.....cant help you, if it does....a Mazda Dealer will help you with quesries no worries!!!

Good luck
:)
Cheers

Thanks for the advice. Form your descriptions it must be after market and I found out today that it does not work anyway. I managed to start the car while it was apparently on?????.

I will get a new one fitted rather than get this one repaired by the dealer that way I know what I have.
Braddon Car Stereo and Communication recommended a mellennium system. Has anyone had any experience with Mellennium alarms?

Thanks

Nerner,

I believe all NB8As came with a factory immobiliser that doesn't need a remote, it's built into the key.

Do you have a key with a fat rubbery plastic top? If so, you've got a factory immobiliser which is built into the lock and key. The car can't be started without one of the original keys (or one programmed in by a dealer). You shouldn't need an immobilizer unless someone steals your keys (in which case, they'll likely have the immobilizer fob anyway.

Hope this helps,
Alf

Sorry I didn't credit you fig. It didn't seem to have gotten through the first time, I thought a little rephrasing might help.

The immobaliser is in the key, the 2nd \"alarm\" might be for central locking and to set of a siren if the doors are opened.

Does the remote look like this?

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I have two different remotes neither looks like the one in the photo. One has two buttons (one big one small) and the other had a single button with the word vision on it (The vision one does not do anything at all). I traced some of the wiring and found a control box zip tied to the wiring loom so I am now pretty sure that it is all after market.

Thanks to everyone that offered some advice.
