Ok....its begun

The \"almost stock 1.6\" is getting a paint job.

firstly is the bumperbar. Its currently white. It had started out as a classic red & the current paint is peeling off. so figure, its not a good start to use it as a base. So all the current paint has to come off.

Whats the best way to strip the paint off without sanding too much as i figure if i sand it all off its going to pretty hard not to get it wavy. In some parts it will peel off.

i'll be bleeding the knowlege base on this forum a fair bit.....so any help will be apreciated.

You can get dedicated bumper paint stripper. It removes the paint without damaging the plastic bumper cover. It comes in a spray can and is available at specialist automotive paint suppliers.
Shiney black one with added red bits. Member of the fart club. Now with extra doof and Sunlong. - deceased and gone to heaven

Since some of it is peeled off anyway, just hit it with the high pressure spray at a carwash, it'll peel the rest of the paint off easily

Well I ended up putting elbow grease into it. Its turning out OK. Got just a litte less than half done. As I'm sanding, the loose bits just come off anyway. Looks like this is going to take quite some time to do the whole car.LOL

This bumper has had 2 coast of white & 1 coat of red.....with primer under each ..... Ohh well its all comming off. :mrgreen:

as for DIY King....Not sure there Eggbox.....astro & Steve818 have done thiers too. they both deserve standing aplause.

well the bumper is finally on. As well as the light cover & front side panel.
The bumper ended up being a different bumper than the one above.

This one has the original paint which is flexible. So none of the paint chipping & cracking issues once its sprayed....... But ......it also has some added bling :mrgreen: :mrgreen: 8)

Ladies & Gentlemen....let me assure you....it is totally useless. But ohhhh..the brag factor :mrgreen: :mrgreen: 8)
Thanks to lowmiata, & Mr_Q for thier bits.

I've started talking to the local paint suplier who is more than happy to help. So....Its all good. A fair bit of prepping work is still required.

Also the lining up is with fenders , bonnets & light covers is proving to be a little headache for me. Ohh well......maybe the next Dodgy Day :mrgreen:

With all those mismatched panels, your d0ri d0ri spec reputation will be intact.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I don't think MX5's make very good Taxi's but yours is doing a good impression at the moment Stan :P

Seriously though mate it is good to see it is progressing well. I am impressed with your skill as I believe lining up the front end of an NA is hard with so many angles around the cone and pop-up lights.

Are you any good at removing hail damage????

spranga....replacing panels is easy. I'm sure you can do it too. Just getting them lined up is the hard bit. :lol:
