CD/Tuner Dead?

So, I'm driving along and all of a sudden the radio goes dead. Still indicates it is receiving all the presets but no sound
. I stop and realise that the volume output is very low even though the volume control is in the normal place. So I turn it up and it sounds a bit better but not a \"full\" sound....a bit \"tinny\". Hmmmmm........put in a CD............almost have a heart attack when it starts playing because volume setting is still high
.
So, the volume control is OK with a CD but cr@p with the tuner. It's a Sony head unit about 8(?) years old, no external amplifier and just feeds to two door speakers.
Is the HU dead inside somewhere?
Get a new one that will also play MP3?

Check the settings first. Dose the HU have an ATT button? or maybe the LOC station mode is on. Try disconecting the battery and resting the the HU.

I'll check it out, no manual for the thing. It was working fine........like it has for the last 3 years I've had the car..........and without doing anything the dumb thing just went to some half mute mode.

You can usaly find a manual online if you google the modle number.

Miata, what advice would you give JBT in regards to his radio?

Well I tried to Google the modle, the moodle and the model and found a manual for the CD/Tuner which, as it turns out, is a CDX-4800X. At least I know how to work the thing now
Reset, pulled it out, looked hard at it, tried the technical tap, put it back in and everything but could not fix the problem.
.
Looks like I'll have to look around for a similar newbie.....with MP3 this time. Thanks for the help Ralphff.

Maybe you didn't look at it in the correct way, or the tap was in the wrong direction.
If you get a new one then maybe you will be lucky with the cradle and wiring harness still being the same.
