I have JL Audio 6\" splits which fit perfectly. The tweeters are tied to the air vents in the corner of the dash by little zip ties which are under the tweeter and allow it to sit flush.
Most decent 2-ways of this size are 6\". You won't see any real benefit from a 6.5\".

spend the extra money and get the splits.
much better quality and better sound. you won't regret it but it does cost a bit more.
I spent $300 on a pair of DLS splits.

Has anyone put 8\" speakers in the doors of an NA?
How much modification would be required?

possible.. you'll need to dremel a bigger whole in the door frame to mount the speaker.
you'll probally want to make a MDF ring to mount the speaker on to as well.
and i don't know about the mount depth... you might be lucky witha cheaper 8\" speaker but anything with a mig magnet might not fit in the door.
you'll then need to cut in to the door panel to make it all nice.
maybe alot of sound dampening too to keep the door from vibrating like crazy too....
hmmm
i might try it.

no need for an amp, im running four 6\" off our headunit.
ofcourse an amp would be better but its not necessary.

I run mine off the headunit for about a year until I bothered to put a 4x30w amp in and BOY does it make a HUGE difference. The Headunit was by no means underpowered (45x claimed) but in reality this is only around 10w RMS and the dynamic range is much less. If you have an amp or can afford one get it.

I put in JL Audio TR600 6\" two ways. I had to drill one or two mounting holes and use those clip on self tapper washer things. They hide under the original door trims and sound great. I can hear the music etc. no problem at 100+km/hr roof down. No amp and a Sony head unit of ?? age.

The SQ increase I got by changing to an aftermarket headunit (from the standard cassette deck) was noticeable - and then the SQ increase again from going to that to the amp was even more noticeable. My problem at the moment with my Jaycar splits is that I have nowhere to mount the tweeter, and they rattle the crap out of the door trim!

How come they're rattling the trim???
My Pioneer splits don't do this at all???

The air movement from the cones is pushing the trim around.

Perhaps you can stick some silicone at the back to hold them steady?

Any trouble incorporating the plastic weathershields with new 6in door speakers?
I've got a pair of 16cm 2-way clarions lying around that didn't seem to fit when I sized them up earlier this year. Do the mounting holes mate up on the 6 inch units you guys have used?

I just got some plastic sheeting I had lying around. I put it behind the speaker and sort of wrapped it and used the speaker to hold the plastic there between the speaker and door.

How's the speaker 'breathing' from the rear?????
