The NA's wiring is dodgy. All my wiring is loose...air con, headunit etc etc. Though its all re-wired and fixed now, I used to hate it when the headunit, air con and windows, windscreen wipers would all just turn off or stop all of a sudden, especially after hitting a big pothole!

If it's 2000 model and it cuts out, chances are your aftermarket wiring is just band-aided up instead of soldered or crimped together.
You can fix it yourself. Buy some tab connectors and when you take the headunit out, only take one wire out at a time and crimp a female on one end and a male on the other end. Doing it one by one will make sure you don;t get the wires mixed up.

with my mobile phone in the holder below the headunit i get interference through the speakers at the same time every hour from the mobile network check. given the other times your problem happens i.e. cleaning (assuming you're using an electrical appliance, so maybe interference again) & over bumps, it could be a combination of wiring & interference from electronic devices.
