Immobiliser/Alarm/Central Locking for NA

Postby RaYmO » Sun May 14, 2006 12:59 pm

Hi Guys,

Im looking at installing an immobiliser/Alarm/Central Locking kit on my NA MX5... Anyone got any recommendations on where I should go as well as what I should get?

Im not sure if I should go down the JBHiFi path or if I should go to a specialist Car Alarm place (which would be much more expensive Im guessing).

Also, has anyone managed to fit a remote boot release on their MX5 before?

Thanks in advance for your input guys/gals.

Chrissy

Hi RaYm0!

I had remote central locking/immobiliser installed on my NA about 6 months ago. I went to JB HiFi and got one that complies with the Australian Standard. It cost me $150 all up including installation (I didn't get the alarm though, it would have annoyed me - plus I have an organic alarm, i.e. a protective blue heeler   ) I have no complaints at all, and I'm very happy for what I got for that price.

Quite a few people have done the remote boot release - it's on my to do list :D

I got an AutoWatch alarm and central locking installed in my NA as soon as I got it. Cost me a fair bit though with all the extras and do dads (power window controllers etc etc). Car specialist alarm place in Castle Hill...am very happy and always go back to him (Bruno) for ANY electrical work...might be a bit pricey but he does the best quality job I have ever seen or experienced. He also installed my neons, speakers, headunit and fixed all my wiring for windows and air con. Very happy customer.

I've got a Repeller with central locking and microwave sensor. Seems to work well. No dramas evr with it.

Hey Jules,

Do you find that your car alarm goes off quite often when your top is down?

Nope, I've got the m/wave sensor down a fair bit. Maybe it's ceased working. It took a bit of tinkering to get it right.

Thanks for verifying it Chrissy!

I got a quote from JB Hifi and it is $500+ fitted (for the central locking/immobiliser/alarm) :?

$500 fitted is actually not a bad price for CDL and alarm/immobiliser. I've been quoted $499 for the Autowatch system plus another $220 if I wanted central locking added . The other system I've been checking out is the Black Widow BW10000 unit which is also about $499 fitted, but Strathfield are at least a little more reasonable with the central locking costs.

At this rate I think I might as well buy a $49 central locking kit and do that part myself :?.

RaYmO the Warlock system you were quoted - is that a 2-point immobiliser?

The quote I got from JB Hifi @ Chatswood is as follows:

Central Locking
Warlock Immobiliser
Warlock 5500SA Alarm (the one with an independant back up battery)

$560 for the above fitted into the MX.

Theres no microwave sensor but it should do the trick. Im not sure if I should get the Alarm though as no one really notices it and its a bit of an annoyance when it goes off.

May need to start a poll on whether an alarm is a good idea or not :)

Each to their own of course, but this is what I figured. Especially if the alarm is effectively going to cost $410.
