polymer sealant vs wax

Postby jimbojones » Tue Apr 18, 2006 4:26 pm

hi all

just wondering what the consensus is here. i've got a new black NC which unfortunately lives outside mostly. even tho it's got the factory paint protection process, it doesn't seem to have that good a shine on it and the dirt seems to stick on the paint.

i've been doing a bit of reading on waxes vs poly sealants. it seems that poly sealants are all new cars need but then, most people seem to use wax. i like a good shine on my car but i'm not a fanatic about having a showroom finish. any advice on brands, e.g. meguiars, poorboy, mothers, zaino, swissol, etc?

also, does anyone know a good value for money detailer in sydney? i don't want to spend a fortune but i'm not willing to scrimp and get a half arsed job. i'd do it myself but i'm too lazy, too busy and besides, don't have a shaded area to do it in.

any help wouldbe appreciated.

thanks

jimmy

Put a sealent on, then put a wax on.

I recommend using the Klasse sealent, then putting the P21s wax on top.

Find a shady area, and do it yourself... be sure to get some good microfibre clothes (ie, not Kenco), it will make the process a lot easier.

You would be best to use a polymer sealant.
There is a product called permaguard which use a reactive polymer sealant, this is the best stuff to use for you car but it is very expensive. The trade off is you never have to polish your car again.
I do contract work for these guys and it is applied to planes boats and cars.
The problem with a wax is that it drys out the paint work over the years and requires the paint to be cut back, reducing the thickness of the paint etc. However there arent many cheap polymer sealants that last that long (around 8 weeks).
The dramas with polymers is they are primarily silicon based which can cure at different rates when not applied properly, and it is very easy to wipe to much off.
For a cheap alternative the zaino z2pro found on the above site claims to be a very good sealant. 6 month protection.
What ever you do do not follow the instuctions on the above site, always use a circular motion simmilar to if you where sanding paint.

Jimbo...

Car Styling Centre at 7 Hills.. the same guys I recommended to do window tints have looked after 2 of my 3 MX5's as far as detailing and polishing (When I lived in Sydney). The only reason I sold my 99 MX5 NB8A for such a high price at the time was that it had been looked after by these fellas for most of its life. They use Meguiars too....

Corner of Station Road and Prospect highway from memory.

Well worth the trip West

I use the Sealant with Wax over the top.

If you give it a good seal every now and then it will be easy to keep clean with a good wash with water and some \"quick detailer\" wax.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
