I finally discovered the source of an annoying squeak. The bonnet restraint has worn a groove in the back of the holding bracket on the bonnet.
This bracket is rivetted into the aluminium bonnet of my 90 NA.
I have placed felt pads on the bonnet but only stopped the rattle when I bound the bracket in tape.
Anyone have an idea on how I might be able to permanently fix the groove?

I had exactly the same prob on my previous 5. I too bound the bracket with cloth backed heavy duty tape. I never did get around to a permanent fix, I just replaced the tape every couple of months. My current 5 was starting to do the same thing, I moved the bonnet restraint bracket to reduce the movement and stop the groove from developing further.
At the time my thoughts for a permanent fix were, drill out the rivets and find a replace bracket at a wreckers, or build up the metal on the restraint somehow

On my NA I adjusted the latch down a little to take up the slack then used copious amounts of grease on the stricker to try to stop it wearing more. I've made sure everything is well lubricated on the SP from day one and so far there is no groove wearing in the stricker.
