You can buy just the cable. Do a search on the big forum for more info on how to fit. http://forum.miata.net/vb/
An alternative is to take the car to the MX-5 Factory (aka Oven Baked Enamel), in Molan St Ringwood. Ask for Dick Richey. He (or his staff) has fitted many a new cable for MX-5 windows, including one for me many a few years back.

re
any hints on who sells cables in aus, better still vic?
mazda doesnt sell cable only - rang em for a laugh - $780 for a new regulator. yeah, right...
mx5parts nz has em, but hes getting married tomorrow, so is slightly closed...
mania makes no reference to them on their www - i'll give em a call tomorrow, see if they can bother answering the fone.

I got a set of window cables through Mania a couple of months back. There's two cables for each side and the cost was about $80 for each side (ie. $40 per cable).
I'm pretty sure the cables were genuine Mazda parts, so maybe the Mazda guy you spoke to didn't know what he was looking for or you need to specify a different year model.
Or just get them through Mania.
