Hey AB, the striker plates can be unbolted but you need a \"Tx\" drive. At a pinch you may be able to undo them with an allen key.
Many people have dríven great distances without the side striker plates fitted, so temporarily driving without isn't a problem. Frankensteins are required though.
Having just had the experience of having to sacrife the BD for the hardtop I would say, as your bar touched the soft top then it's going to be really hard up against the hardtop. My BD had 10 mm gap with the soft top, but rubbed and pushed against the hardtop, so I removed the BD (albeit temporarily).
Now measurements, this is going to be difficult to explain but here goes.
Start at the seatbelt tower, surrounding the tower is a plastic shroud. Now find where the shroud meets the parcel shelf, there is a 12 mm lip.
Measuring from the base of the L, vertically upward, my hardtop is 435 mm above the lip. It's not easy to measure the centre as the roof is higher and the carpets would be different thickness depending on how they have been treated. Using the seatbelt measure should give a universal height independant of the car.
You could always take the bar off till you had time to experiment.
Good luck
