All car doors allow water inside them, some cars more than others. The MX5's get particularily wet. Thats why manufacturers use a plastic liner behind the door trim to stop the water entering the vehicle, and the MX5 speakers came with a plastic shroud behind them from the factory.

Best bet is to get some speaker shields from your friendly car stereo installer or bodge up something yourself to keep the water off your speakers. Though most non-paper speakers are water resistant these days.

what do you mean by "they don't go as loud", are you certain it's because they are wet? I can't picture how a speaker cone being wet would damped the volume for any more than a second after all the water has been shaken off. It wouldn't affect the higher frequencies... so if it's an attenuation of all frequencies at once while wet (overall quieter) then i'd be checkin the wiring... but it still seems wierd.

if they don't go as loud, the answer is to turn them up louder... if you are always pushing them to the limits, then maybe its the noise floor that has increased (road noise from wet road)... is there a difference when sitting at lights? In that case an upgrade sounds like the go... maybe a sub to take the stress off the speakers in the door (which leaves you not even enough room for a putter!)

Not saying it isn't possible, just seems strange. I imagine any speaker protection would be there to increase the life of the speaker rather than keep them efficient.
