Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
So when looking at a virtual Dyno
Ignore the AFR. Its been sorted.
Ignore the final HP numbers. There is no smoothing
but look at the graph from 5000 RPM upwards.
It just goes bonkers. Its reasonably smooth below 5000 rpm
then the power plot goes....whoooooo sheeeeet.
It must be said. The cams come on song at around 4500 -5000 rpms & it sings poetry. I cant hear or feel any complaining by the valves.
but does that mean with the drastic change in plotting that the valves are resonating or Jumpng?
just curious.
valves are original 29 year old 329K km jobbies

Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
Got some heavier Valves lined up for Patchy.
Hopefully get it done tomorrow.
Ive read reports that these are a fraction heavy. But thats the same pressure the cam manufacturer reccomends.
well see
Usual sh*t, its become routine
valve cover off
cams out
old springs out
new spring in
cams in
timing
run in cams for 15 min....
got plenty of engine assembly lube.....dirty sticky sh*t....
don't know maybe 3 hrs?
I think Ive had the cams in & out about 6 or 7 times in the last 12 months.....

That's impressive. I haven't had the guts to crack open my engine. Kinda a bucket list item though.
Hope the springs work out for you.

Thanks lachy.
Not exactly breaking it open.....maybe only slightly. Not as though I'm changing pistons
on a B6 .....what can you loose right? If I break it....what a shame
I need to get a replacement engine dear wifey.....ohh look there just happens to be one for sale.....I must purchase one now & its a total bargain.

Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
complications....spings are hard. i don't have the leverage; strength or correct angle to get them in.....call for drastic measures Billybunter style. I'm considering taking the head off. I've got a spare Head gasket. but I'm just holding off just incase a better idea suddenly appears. so much for a quick job. I've managed the 2 exhaust ones on no 1 cylinder. Absolute fail on the Intake ones. no matter what I try.

Got home late today, only had time to wash the Problem Child for tomorrow's run......no scotch but I did have some vodka in the pantry though, so in empathy- (and appreciation for the new signature line) I had one or 3 of those for ya

I love reading that patchy is getting a good workout again.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
ha, 3 hrs a said
it was all going good......
The operating Theater at day break.
Nurse......thus should be a walk in the front yard.
The offending pieces of equipment.
OEM on the left. Volvo springs on the right.
cut a long story short. while removing the spring was a walk in the park. Replacing them was dammed more difficult. I count stop movement of the valve completely but also the valves are a heavier compression. I just didn't have the strength to compress them hard enough to get the valve keepers to locate. I managed the exhaust springs easy enough
but after about 90 minutes of trying to get the inlet valves in, I came to the conclusion this is not working. I figured I can get the old springs back in. Ive done it before. Then sh*t got real & there was a drastic escalation.
The only way I can get them in is to remove the head. & press those valves on the bench.
at this stage the fun was over & I stopped taking pictures....
but a considerable time was spent cleaning the block surface for the new head gasket.
and the usual check, double check & recheck the cam timing.
Finished at around 4.30 pm. thats a solid day.
I broke off the O2 sensor connector......arrrrgh....so currently running without one. may get to that today. Maybe not.
verdict?
no idea yet. It seemed drastically different initially. But that's because the timing had changed when I took off the CAS. Changed the base tune dramatically. But that's back to normal now.

Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
Patchy Dumped its guts.
major oil leaks
major oil clouds out of the exsaust when giving it & deceleration.
Pulled the trigger on a NB8A BP4W engine
going for a road trip on the weekend of the 9th September. to pick up engine in QLD.
Most things for install are clear to me & why.
Only thing I have to get my head around is the VICS controll on the MS2PnP but I think I'm getting there.
according to Tighe cams they have BP blanks. I could be pulling the trigger on 935C cams very shortly.....
considering the Xforce headers to replace my current Genie headers. they should just slot in. they are 4-2-1
My B6 cams will most likely be up for sale once I'm ready to pull it all out in about a month or 2.
last time i did anything similar i thought maybe 4 weeks but it took me almost 6 months.
lots of plans. some of which may or may not eventuate....
any comments tips & sh*t all very welcome
does anyone have any old NA 6 harness lying around? I'd like to replace some old dodgy connectors. main offenders being the connectors for the CAS, O2 sensor & rear thermostat sensor.
I'll also be looking for some NB8A harness connectors like the TPS one & IAC valve....unsure if any come with the engine. But I'll ask

Where in QLD will you be picking up the engine? I may have bits of a NA6 harness for you to look at.

Re: Patchy's Fawlty Towers risk management. Enter at own risk
Picked up the BP-4W on the weekend. Drove up to Brisbane on Sat. Back down to Sydney the next.
The Honda civic made easy work of 2000 km in 2 days. basicaly the engine was put in the boot with bucket loads of very thick cardboard to protect the wife car & tied down with rope.
First plan is to get it on a engine stand by next weekend. take all the bits off & giver it a clean down.
Then I'll probably test fit the cams & figure out where I need to go with all the shims & lifters.
Then the head is going to get a basic port match & polish.
at the same time. I'll check the valves & valve seats. So i can get the head & valve seats machined at the same time.
still a little unsure about how much I will shave off. The cam manufacturer recommends anywhere between 10-11:1 CR.
That will keep me going. Lots of stuff to source. I'll hopefully have all this ready to go in by Jan or feb next year
