Awesome, thanks heaps for that.
I'm looking at ripping the carpet out when I fit my harness bars & wasn't keen on putting the brown back in.
Never had a thought of just leaving the carpet out.
P.S. Love how clean your car is.

Also the bonus of 100x easier to clean, just pop the drains and use a soapy sponge.
I think from memory though you can be defected for a lack of a heel pad/carpet (well, in Vic). But it's such a low likelihood that it's not worth worrying about.

This thread makes me think I should finish off my interior. I finally attached the second interior door handle the other day, all it needs now is a clean and for me to re-trim the diver's seat.

I ripped my carpet out years ago, and used POR15 for the interior, boot and now the engine bay. It's very long wearing (interior has held up extremely well) and ridiculously easy to use, as long as you follow their prep instructions right. The whole interior can be done for about $50, with all prep and paint included. Highly recommended.

I'm going back to carpet now though, purely as I want that classic interior. The sewing machine is set up so I can edge the carpets, just waiting on getting the right carpet.

For those wondering about running no carpet, it's fine. You really don't notice any more noise. Easy to rip out.

If you want to convert back to carpet at some stage though, SAVE YOURS. There aren't any carpet kits being made in Australia last time I checked and no, wreckers don't really save them. You have to be very lucky to score some in ok condition. You can buy carpet and make them up no worries, but edging can be a pain and you need either an industrial sewing machine or an old sewing machine like mine (a non-powered treadle machine from the 1800s that was used on thick corsetry and upholstery). You'll just break needles constantly otherwise. Big tip for that: wear safety glasses or normal glasses. I learnt this working in costuming for the QLD Ballet company a long time ago and shards of needles flying at your face is not nice. If you're doing thick fabrics it will happen. Often.

You can get carpets made up by a trimmer, but it will set you back around $800 - $1200. It's a lot of work.

Ah, looks like Knox have just started doing MX5 carpet. Must have been in the past few weeks. Great news, as I always found it odd you can get carpet for a Hillman Hunter and not an MX5 :lol:

Edging should not be a problem- the Carpet warehouses all use contractors who have overlockers for this job- and in theory at least if a carpet is cut to profile then the overlocker can do his job. The overlockers charge the Carpet warehouses by the metre and its not expensive.

I noticed you have a Trap tombstone and no console. What do you intend to do about window switches? I'm going a similar route and not sure where I'm going to mount them.

The two knobs by the clock are the power windows.

For power windows, I'm partial to the revlimiter momentary-switches solution:

- mounted in the tombstone with the guards either side they'd look great:

(IMO, revlimiter's car, Sharka, is pure 70's porn - I love it, more if it had the shorty-console.)

I went for missile switches, pew pew pew!

They are auto down too which is handy, though sourcing the appropriate DPDT momentary switches took longer than I thought
