debadging.. whos done it?

Postby yakob » Thu Oct 30, 2008 1:10 pm

Yes, and i am aware of that. However i was asking people if they had done it themselves, and how they have done it.

You sand back the area around it, get some filler, fill it, sand it, prime it, spray the panel.

Its not rocket science

Im talking about little touch up jobs, rather than spraying the whole panel, get me?

OK, it can be done, and this is how I have done it. Please remember that this is just one method, and it takes patience.

Disclaimer

This was on a black car, I cannot make promises for your individual colour, etc.

Materials

'Green Stuff' modelling putty. You can buy this from modelling shops, and also 'Games Workshop'.
2000+ Grit sandpaper
Toothpicks
Touch up paint.
water + detergent in a spray bottle / plant mister.
Meguiar's Scratch-X
Clean terry-towelling cloth.

Method

1. Remove the badges.
2. Ensure there is absolutely no rust.
3. Plug the hole, from behind, using whatever method you can. Alternately, you can create a blob of putty and plug the hole. You may need to do this in layers, but please read point (4) first...
4. Use a toothpick to make sure the level of the putty is just below the level of the paint / panel.
5. Ensure the putty is completely dry.
6. Get a new toothpick and dip it into the touch-up paint, then allow that drop into the small, recessed, putty-filled hole.
7. Allow to dry.
8. Repeat step 7 until such a time as the paint is just above the surface of the panel / paint.
9. Sand back (and I mean this next bit) ridiculously gently, possibly using the water + detergent to ensure no burning of paint, etc.
10. Do NOT panic when the area you have sanded is very matt in appearance.
11. Use the Scratch-X & cloth to clean up any scratched area.
12. Repeat steps 6+ if you have missed any spots.

I hope this helps.

It will be blindingly obvious from an angle. There is a time and place for bodgy jobs, paint on a dark car isn't one of them.

I'd either live with the holes, do it properly or just not take the badge off

I did my car about a year ago.. Here is how it came out.

Basically did exactly what Adam said. Pulled the badges, filled the holes, and then primed and painted.

I had my NB8A resprayed Black about 6 months back, I removed every badge from it before spraying and now have fitted 2 badges with double sided tape only, an enamel badge on the nose and the original MX-5 badge which was near the number plate has been fitted under the brake lamp, it looks simple and clean.
I also used the fill and paint method on my alfa romeo but I feather sprayed clear coat on top then used 2000 grit wet and dry which gave a perfect finished job. :P
