A sphere is the strongest geometry we have. So a hemisphere is slightly less strong. Having said that, as the hardtop is clamped on in 6 places and genuinely doesn't move, even when really fanging it around , it forms a hemisphere where before there was nothing.
Thats the logic I attribute to the observed phenomena.
As for the hardtop crumpling, I'm sure it would be no better than the soft top. The BD would be much better protection imho.

well, the Mazda engineers have stated that the hard top has no part in making the car any more solid than it already is. Bwob....God's sidekick , has said the same. However King Matty is ( or was)of the opinion that on an old NA where everything is loose, has a littelbenifit . There has been great may discussions about this . Personally I don't have a clue. But my old rattled out hard top, Cretainly did not contribute any rigitety.
