It's starting to look more like peachy than patchy.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Patchy's Labour of love

Postby StanTheMan » Thu Sep 03, 2009 8:26 am

It was Patchy's birthday

First it was time for the Genie extractors 2.25"exhaust & enlarged Mania CAI

Image

difference is phenominal.....torque increased heap....dropping the clutch & loosing treaction at 4000 rpm was really easy. It added a huge amount of torque at that rpm range. But for some reason it had developed A FLAT SPOT AT 3200 rpm.
theories as to why were a dodgy O2 sensor, not getting enough fuel because of the Crystal Modification in the ECY as well as tightening of the spring in the AFM.
Of course I then proceeded to adjust the spring in the AFM but because I'd neglected o seal it when I did adjust it \a while back sopa had otten into it & coroded the aloy. I couln't move the spring.

So he next step was to install this

Image

The plan was to load a map which is avail on the adaptronic site. But of course I didn't have a serial conector on my laptop.
You all remeber Rodent....he came to the rescue.....he had an old laptop with a serial port. But as it turned out....No CD or USB port.
So I sent all the maps I nheededw to bigdog....who had acess to an old #" inch floppy drive. He posted me the disc....so I was patiently waiting for the disc when it finally arrive a day or 2 later.

Of course....for some reason that didn't work either
so the adaptronic was conected & she started......but she was a rel bitch to drive in peak hr

so the decision was to intall the cams one night. after another plan failed to install the map i wanted loaded I was now very impatient & real eger to have tis installed.

The cams are 272 duration 8.9mm lift & complimented with Fadenza Cam gears. End of story.

I'm about to take off the timing belt....No return from here.
TBC.

That picture of Stan pedalling is a classic. I guess Stan still needs to get around when Patchy's indisposed (don't forget the helmet).

So I got cracking

a little while later The cams went in
Image

duration 272

lift 0.352" or 8.9mm...I think

inlet & exhaust are both he same

So a little while later it was all back together again & time to start her.

Cams are in. everything is together. But she's running like a pig.

she's running as though she's running only on 3 cylinders. Certainly not drivable like before. Its real rough.

I also broke off the water temperature sensor. Not sure what that means....always running rich?

so I guess the inevitable is going to have to happen totomorrow nightnight. Rip it all down again & check the timing. Although I'm pretty certain the timing is right but I have to check it.

other things could be that the CAS is 180 deg off? would that make a difference?

it was set at 15deg BTDC because thats where I run it. The adaptronic runs it at 18 BTDC as far as I know. maybe it needs to be reset?

spark plug leads the wrong way?

this is how she's running

Reset ur timing and let the adaptronic adjust it, then go from there...mind you welcome to the fun of making a car with cams and 'puter idle properly hahaha

So it was time to face the music.

firstly I checked the leads to make sure they were right. Took them off put them back on again. I checked for any apparent air leaks in the enlagrged air intake. None there from what i could tell. So then I decided to start her up. It was easy enough she even idles without hesitating wasn't shaking like last night.

So then I decided to start her up. It was easy enough she even idles without hesitating wasn't shaking like the night before.

so I let her idle for a minute then decided....wonder what happens if i rev it. She revved OK . didn't stall not even hesitated.

mmmm may be i'l take her for a drive. As I was slowly negotiating the front yard there was smooth gentle revving......no stalling. No hesitating.

as i turned down he hill she accelerated. no probs up to about 4000 rpm but then the engine gets loud & felt as though it was complaining a bit.

bloody hell its loud now.

So I took her back home. Let her idle a bit longer. Took her out again. Runing smoother again. reving above 4000 rpm get easier.

so this is what she sounds like now.

I love the Darth Vader sound towards the end LOL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgRd91zrgMk

so the theory is

the night when I installed the cams, I was turning it it got stuck a little. Nathan mentioned something about.....should that be like that?

I sort of hesitated but decided it to ignore it.

but maybe the cams just needed a little time to settle in & will be getting smother over the next few hundred k's

The cams got smoother over the next few days . She absolutely screams once you get past 5000rpm. The decibel level is incredible from inside the car. However I was sitting behind my car in a standardish Mx5 NC last night & it doesn't seem that loud from a pedestrian point of view.

But when you do drive it it feels as though you hit VTECH when it gets to 5000RPM. It revs all the way to 7700 RPM I haven't hit the limiter yet but I got my computer working & have been mucking around with the fuel map, trigger angles & ignition.

Originally I was a little reluctant because people were saying a 272 Duration is to aggressive for a street car. I was seriously considering swapping them for either 264 or 256 duration. But after driving them I'm very happy. Of course there is compromises. Its reasonably easy to stall under 2000 RPM. It has about the same power but certainly not the torque under 4000 rpm as before. But it certainly drivable in peak hour traffic. Ohhh but the Roar from inside the cabin.......is just insane.

Also the engine which is in the car came out of a race car. The head has had work done the side of the lifter sto acomodate 10mm lift cams it was running previously. So that is somethinhg I didn't have to worry about. But when checking for clearnce......gees it was close.

A few days later Prof. Ampz came to see the map. He smothed out the fuel map. checked the timing, triming & so forth we even mucked around with a transient thotle isse it has. Not completely fixed but much better than before.

So last friday Patchy was going to the Dyno to check the map by an expert. The day before the big Club day at MX5 Mania. Unfotunately I coun't make it on the sat. I had to work.

so friday morning arrived. Patchy was put on the Dyno

It would be fair to say my Willy is about to fall off as it's been getting the most serious workout in years.

David did muck around with the tuune for about & hr & managed to open the CAS bolt I had totally destroyed to set the timing correctly

Image

this is how she idles now. It was a huge improvement to how it was before.

Since then I've changed a few things under the close supevision of Prof. Ampz....its getting better & better

so thats it. Happy Birthday Patchy
