Re: Roll Over Protection discussion
Norm weld's to the parcel shelf for the rearward hoop supports. I have spoken to him about cages and asked about running the legs to the boot and he said it was too much work and he isn't interested.
Depending on your state, NCOP isn't enforced yet. I know QLD is still in draft form.
You should be able to find state specific legislation regarding roll cages.

Where do the legs of the main hoop go? Also on the parcel shelf?

Re: Roll Over Protection discussion
unsure.
I have seen some that go to the floor. Loose a bit of seat travel though.

This guy is one lucky dude!! The marshall frustrates me though; I canot believe that he would be removing his helmet and letting him move around. If I was that marshall the driver would not move an inch until he was in a neck brace and on a spineboard!!

Re: Roll Over Protection discussion
I have seen that vid posted all over the place. One seriously lucky driver, I wonder if he knows just how lucky he is to have got away without injury.
He should have been smart enough to back out of it as soon as something felt wrong.
The style bar has the harness mounted to it.
The harness slopes UP and is twisted!
The harness is not pulled any where near tight enough. This is where 5 & 6 point harnesses rock, get the lap belt pulled properly tight (you should not be able to push yourself further back inthe seat or move to the side) and then really crank the shoulder belts down...pull them tight as you can and then drop your shoulder and pull them tight again.
He is using half back seats.
He has stuff flailing around, the other harness should have been buckled and pulled tight.
He is not using arm restraints.
His helmet does not even fit FFS.
Okay so it looks to primarily be his road cruiser but if you are going to be pushing 130MPH (and no doubt on some tracks this car would puch 150MPH) then you better be farking serious about safety or keep yourself under control and not push the car to its maximum.
An official is on the scene super quick....and arrives in shorts and a t-shirt and with no fire extinguisher!! Cars very rarely catch fire fortunately but with an almighty accident like that you just dont know what is leaking from where. To then lean on the top of the blokes helmet and allow him to take it off is just impossibly stupid. I spent 6 years on rescue crew at a track, I have seen drivers say "I'm okay I'm okay" push their way out of a car and then have their broken leg fold in half underneath them......THEN the adrenaline wears off!
Losing a bit of seat travel is fine as I sit close to the wheel anyway. For the cost of a BD or + bar I reckon you could get a main hoop that would go to the floor with a cross bar and harness bar in it and the two rear stays going to the boot with a cross bar.
I may still go with a + bar but I think I am also going to talk to a few other workshops that do cages and see what they reckon they can do.

I was marvelling at the fact that he could have fractured his C1 or C2 vertebra, and if he moved his head the wrong way he could die instantly, never mind the fact that he survived the crash itself!!

Absolutely! With the rush of the driving and then the accident he wouldnt know if he is hurt. From what I have been told a broken neck is not especially painfull either, just feels stiff and sore like when you have been sleeping in a funny position or something.

Oh my god, I feel like I could kill that marshal. I work in the healthcare industry and nothing shits me more than seeing idiots with the best of intentions doing stuff like this. if you don't know what you're doing, don't try.

What's that? Spinal injury?
What I want you yo do is twist your neck as far as it can go one way, then the other.
There we go, we've guaranteed you a spinal injury now!

Re: Roll Over Protection discussion
Check with one of the NSW guys, but it should be fine.
Most rollbars are not CAMS approved anyway, they may be able to be CAMS approved, but not many bother with buying the paperwork to prove it.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure the rules have changed in that bars no longer need to be CAMS approved, they simply need to look strong enough to the scrutineer. (Something like that anyway)
Check up on that ^ I can't remember if it was something that did go through, or they were thinking about it.

Yeah, not all levels of all activities in all states & territories require them to be CAMS certified, so depends on what you're actually going to be doing. There are a couple of good recent threads around here somewhere.

MX5 with a hardtop is still a convertible.

True, but some tracks are silly like that.
I think Winton has a rule that if a convertable has no rollbar installed, you must drive with the softop up or a hardtop on.
Because apparently Vinyl and Fibreglass are strong enough to protect you in a rollover

Re: Roll Over Protection discussion
Wakefield has that rule too. I was told it's more to stop you flailing your arms above the roof than a matter of it protecting you.
