I run in the wild wild west so there are no CAMS classes unless you are doing circuit racing. I run in a supposedly road registered class in which case I don't run the wing at all, just a front splitter, although my car is becoming less and less suitable for that class. I was thinking of moving to the outright class so I can continue developing the aero on my car and run Hoosiers... you can see the profile here:

Ideally I should be in CAMS 2B I think. Which has a few more restrictions on rear aero than 3D. It doesn't really matter unless I head over east for an event.

My wing sort of complies with 2B but I think it sits too high (ie more than 300mm). It has a 250 chord width but it probably looks a bit bigger in that photo due to the wide lens. And yes I didn't intend to do the cut-outs, at the time I was making this wing, I was a little focused on weight savings so I drew the cutouts as an option but didn't think the support would be strong enough. I think when I sent the CAD file the cutouts were hidden but the CNC software unhides everything before cutting. I've since learnt to clean up all my files before sending them off.

I'm getting them redone now as a solid piece, along with a couple of other bits and pieces. I was thinking of also going a couple of mm thicker in the material and then machining down the bottom where it slots between the body and the boot.

Ahh, I see.

My mounts are 10mm thick, no lightening except for taper. They do wobble a bit, but they are not going anywhere (bolt or weld failure excepted). I shudder at what they might weigh, but I don't want to compromise stiffness and strength by putting lots of holes in them. Aerodynamically, I could add(?) lightening holes lower, out of the high speed airflow, but I don't want to risk weakening the structure such that I have to redo them.

I would caution against thinning the material at the lower end, but I guess if you don't go below the current thickness it should be OK (my preference would be to trim the boot lid to suit). You can always do the shove test at any time too.

How do you find the handling without the rear wing - too much oversteer?

Sorry Olboy, this is supposed to be your thread, but it seems a few of us have hijacked it!! I hope you find something of interest and/or relevance in this discussion, please chime in if you feel inclined.

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

With just the splitter on the car won't understeer at all as expected but its not really taily either. Through the faster sweepers it feels pretty stable with a bit of throttle pushing out the rear when I'm at the limit.

I've only dríven the car once with the rear wing and that was when I spun the big end bearing so I haven't had the time to really test it. I did drop over a second with the wing on and the car felt a lot more settled. I was holding a lot of extra speed through the corners and the braking felt more stable.

I painted my car and its still pretty tidy. I really don't want to cut away the boot especially given I only run the wing occasionally. This means I'm stuck with just the gap in the boot.

Just get another boot to cut up, leave your good boot for when you don't run the wing.
I got another boot to mount my wing on, only cost me $50.
