It's also front seat passengers that need to be mindful of the front airbag.
You see a lot of girls that like to put their feet up on the dash while sitting in the front passenger seat. You can imagine what two knees being forced into your face would do. I've seen it - not pretty.
Of real concern (and bemusement) is that there seems to be a trend for some younger drivers to stick toys, figurines, charms or similar on top of their dash. I know of one incident where a Civic ran up the back of a Landcruiser at around 30km/h. Front passenger airbag deployed which came out from under that dash pad designed to flip open. Well that pad, adorned with some little plastic toys, flipped up so quickly it flung the toys forwards into the windscreen with such force, that they smashed the windscreen and ricocheted back into the front passenger, being the P plater's girlfriend. One toy sliced her face open on the diagonal from her forehead, across her nose, to her chin. Scarred for life.
Airbags save lives, but the comments here are all correct - There needs to be more awareness and education into their operation and potential risks of injury.
