FYI - I took mine out.

I was missing a lower dust boot and the rubber shifter boot was torn anyway..
and my turret had no oil in it.

and since I had to fix the wobbling, I just put it all back together with the stock shifter till I go get a new bolt to stop it from spinning.

after 100km of driving, the plastic bit in the groove was all torn up due to me cutting the head of the screw off.
So I've snapped the plastic off, and now will take it and my bolt and collar to bunnings or some nut and bolt shop to get something that will fit snug.

then will swap back over at a later date.

why don't you measure the slot in the gear lever without the plastic insert...then measure the size of the guide pin.
then try to find plastic tubeing with a tight fit onto the guide pin and a slide fit into the gear lever slot.

or if you know a machinist have a nylon bushs made.

sounds like too much effort.
And, since I hacked up the head of the guide pin I need to replace it.

Sounds like maybe better off spending a bit more on the cobalt with no problems.

Just updating this thread got my shifter last week, tried to follow YouTube video instructions, failed. Figured it out my self.

Things I did
reused the plastic bushings that goes around the ball part of the stock shifter

Did not use the the bushing that came with short shifter

Removed the plastic key way bush from the short shifter because the key on the new short shifter fits into the shifter with the black plastic thing removed.

Installed the key part facing the front of the car (this is opposite to how the stock key is which faced the back of the car)

Bought a the Lower dust boot from mx5cartalk.co.uk worked out to be $38 delivered so cheaper then any I found on ebay

Upper dust boot I didn't replace coz my dish washing glove setup works so well and means I don't have to spend $50

Dundy2456 wrote:I've just installed the eBay short shifter. Nothing but positives so far, however I dodgied up part of the install.. The plastic 'notch' in the larger ball was too narrow for the 'guide pin' thing in the upper collar, so I removed the notch. Still works, there's just a bit of rotational play (because the new notch is slightly wider than the guide pin) that -doesn't- affect shifting.

And i finally understand what that comment meant.

I too had to remove the notch
