Re: Aftermarket mirrors?
I would not be surprised if HKS is right based on my observations. Convex mirrors can really be a problem for obvious reasons and they often carry a warning to drivers about things being closer than you think. It has already been established the subject mirror types are retro style.

Not any more, unfortunately. When we were over here last year, house hunting, I hired a new Toyota something or other (2000km on the dial), and it had convex mirrors on both sides. I found it seriously disconcerting.

And if you do, you run the chance you'll be defected.
It is a part of the ADR's that you have an external mirror on each side of the car, and they must be mounted in an approved position, hence why we dont see the Japanese style mirrors mounted halfway down the front gaurds.
True, but in saying that technically you can also be defected for the Carbon fibre ones as well.

The APR mirrors are definitely convex on both sides.

Re: Aftermarket mirrors?
Convex mirrors are great and should be compulsory, Imports come with them standard. Wouldn't worry about being defected and a person of average intelligence has no problems with them

Re: Aftermarket mirrors?
so why do the convex mirrors carry warnings? Because they distort distance perception - I do not think intelligence has anything to do with it. There are actually recommendations on how to set mirrors correctly to try and avoid blind spots. There is also evidence that some rear facing cameras do the same thing ie give a false perception of distance.

My iron also carries a warning telling me not to have a bath with it.
Like most things common sense goes a long way. Us humans also have this thing called a neck... It allows us to turn our heads to do an over the shoulder check, which if I remember correctly one should do every time when changing lanes etc. (That said I trust my dual convex lenses that possibly carry the death penalty if fitted so much I believe the over the shoulder check isn't required - though I still do check every time anyways)
I swear because of you 3/4 of all topics on this forum turn into a legality/OEM is best shitfight and never end up answering the topics true question.

If you have an issue with Mr Morlock send him a PM, this topic is now off-topic NOT because of his comments but your comments.
Although some may agree, your clearly didn't choose the right avenue to address this problem. Sorry but PM him.

Re: Aftermarket mirrors?
Hjt - The original question asked about aftermarket mirrors and options available. It did not request legality advice or for advice on any oem component. This topic was off way before my previous post.
Anyways... Back on topic then. Let's see how long we can discuss options of aftermarket mirrors and pics of said options only..

Re: Aftermarket mirrors?
I love the mirrors you linked and have myself considered them, for me it's just forking out the cash up front for little benefit. Perhaps one day when some idiot (or myself) side swipes my mirror off.

Agreed. There is little benefit although I do truly believe they offer better visability then the stock mirrors.
A downside though is that standard they are only four screws away from being stolen.

Re: Aftermarket mirrors?
I have M2 Runabouts and they are by far my favourite mod so far. Great vision, anti-glare and convex.
Added bonus is non mx5 people commenting on my car looking 'different' to other mx's. Point out the mirrors and is generally followed by a 'that's it! they look great'.

Re: Aftermarket mirrors?
Yes, +1 to the runabouts! The best thing about them is that they lower the 'centre of gravity' of the car visually because they're so small. This enhances and really emphasises the aggressive flared fenders at the front. They're convex as well, so you get a super wide range of view.
