In a previous life I was a production line welder for ARB (the parent company of BD) and parted on less than amicable terms. Now thats not to say that I couldn't ask them but.....
Actually I think the \"problem\" with the clearance is not a manufacturing issue CT. I'd be interested to know how many spacers BD leave on the seatbelt towers when they do the install. There are 4 or 5 that support the retention bolt.
Although I left a slight gap of ~2 mm between the plastic shroud and the bar mount I believe that if this was reduced to say 0.25 mm then the top of the bar might just move forward enough to clear the window surround where the bar hits.
I was only joking about the oxy. I'm 6' and need all the height in the bar possible.
Although I love the bar (thanks Jeff) I think the hardtop imparts about the same degree of rigidity. Having said that I'm sure the BD would be better/stronger if the car was ever inverted.
Cheers

Does anyone have any pictures?

Not too sure about that. I thought the hardtop provided no rigity what-so-ever. Couldn't imagine it doing anything apart from crumpling in a roll over either.Woo wrote:Although I love the bar (thanks Jeff) I think the hardtop imparts about the same degree of rigidity. Heres my take on it Bevan. I can only go by the physics I know and how it feels (having tried both).
A sphere is the strongest geometry we have. So a hemisphere is slightly less strong. Having said that, as the hardtop is clamped on in 6 places and genuinely doesn't move, even when really fanging it around , it forms a hemisphere where before there was nothing.
Thats the logic I attribute to the observed phenomena.
As for the hardtop crumpling, I'm sure it would be no better than the soft top. The BD would be much better protection imho.

If you plan to put it on it's roof, then either way a BD bar would be a very good idea. Then again even if you don't plan to and drive in a way that could see it happen, refer to point one.
As for the Black on Blue, would only look good if you painted the screen surround black, then it would look like it was meant to be.
To do that to a 10AE
Time for a spray job.

Re:
Cheers Ted, email sent
I've decided it is going to have a color change, thanks for the feedback everyone.
So far the lowest quote for painting is just under $900
I'm sure it will be a perfect match and the highest quality, however 900 is 900 and if I can get as good a job done for less I will.
And Col, the same place quoted me $50 for painting each of the flaps as they are already painted. He suggested ~$10 each less for unpainted. Once again a bit exxy but will be a top quality job. I'll keep you posted of any better prices.
So my question is does anyone know any good painters (preferably in the eastern/northern suburbs)?
Thanks

Hell, for less than half that you could buy some paint and drive across to Adelaide and get Astroboy to paint it!
Not doubting Astro's ability, but it is a long way to go for warranty. Thanks anyway
How long ago did you get your old one painted Craig? Was it pre GST?
The GST slugs $80 on top of the actual cost of spraying which is $800 (hence saying nearly $900) and thankfully that includes a new seal for the rear window.
Here is the pic from Tim, I kind of like the silver look. But as Tim pointed out, if you sprayed the windscreen surround silver it would look dorky without the lid on.
Also looks like someone hit Targa that year Thanks Tim.
Cheers

Few years back now but it's not like it's a super hard job to do, others have had theirs done cheaper and been happy. Cash is your friend here to being a tradies job!

UPDATE !!!!
Thought you might like to see the finished product
Only set me back $660 (with a new window seal), took awhile but it looks fantastic ..... the photo doesn't do it justice, much better in the flesh
Thanks for the feedback on the poll everyone as it convinced me it would be worthwhile, cheers
