MX5 NA8 (97) Auto Electrical question

Postby OzGuvnor » Mon Jun 08, 2015 4:35 pm

Hey, I am installing a simple, light, small and new "media only" Pioneer stereo head unit to replace the early 90's double din cassette/CD unit.

Having to wire by hand as I couldn't find a converter. Which I am OK with.

My question, there are 2 power inputs described in the circuit diagrams I located http://www.miata.net/garage/miata_radio_removal.html

1) power (ACC)
2) power +B (Con 12v)

The pioneer says it needs 2 also. Yellow (constant supply), and red (ignition switch)

Would I be correct in assuming that 'con' above means constant? And that ACC (accessory) refers to the ignition switch?

I think I am correct. But I am no electrician, and assume = ass + u + me. :)

Also, the pioneer has front and rear outputs. Given the NA only has fronts, I was just going to go with rears. Thoughts?

I will post up once its done.

Yeah con would mean constant 12V. You want constant power to it so that it remembers all your settings and the ACC power basically just tells it to turn on when you turn the key to accessory. I'd use just the two front speaker outputs. So you'd wire the yellow wire to a constant 12V source and the red to a 12V source that switches on with the ignition.

You may use the rear outlets later if you pick up a set of headrest speakers. I think NA8s have the wiring built in for them anyway.

Wiring went in fine first go. Tested, but it was too late to finish off the reinstall of the dash. Not being a DD it can wait till next weekend. I even cleaned up the terminals on the power windows. Though my kids had to help me find the spring clips that flew out when I removed the circuit board!

Hence the suggestion to do this inside a clear plastic bag :)
