Double din NA6 tombstone

Postby ArtyMiats » Sun Nov 03, 2013 12:59 pm

Hi all, so I've heard that the NA8 96 onwards tombstone is a perfect fit for a double din. But working with what I've got, which is an NA6 tombstone, is it possible to mount a double din with a fascia kit like this one?
Image
bought a double din this weekend and I'm looking at installing it next weekend. I'd like to have everything ready before I get pulling the car apart and i'm torn whether to buy a fascia kit or just a 96 tombstone. The fascia kit is a lot cheaper and easier to install after all.

Thanks guys!

as you probably the NA6 comes with a 1.5 Din tombstone. Unless you are willing enlarge the hole I would go the NA8 tombstone. It will be a mucher cleaner job.

Agree ... the NA8 tombstone is definitely the way to go. The HU & HVAC are recessed and look so much neater.

1.5din tombstone... My NA6 came with a 2.5din tombstone, 1.5din tape deck and a 1din pocket and the factory mounting bracket will easily support a 2din. I ended up filling the 1/2din gap with an eq/sub processor.

Does the OP have a 1.5din or a 2.5din?

Actually, I was incorrect. The NA6 does have a 2.5 din opening. So, the op could use a .5 din cover. However, I still think the later NA8 tombstone is the way to go.

I've got the 2.5 din. I didn't realise that there was one with a 1.5 din. Right now what I've got in there is a single din head unit, a piece of plastic to cover the rest of the hole, and a 1/2 din pocket. So if I buy the double din mounting kit, I can move the pocket down and use my double din there? The stock bracket will hold my double din?

I don't think what your saying will work, but I may just be getting lost in translation.

If you have the factory bracket, I see no reason why it wouldn't hold a double din h/u. You may need to play around, mount it lower or possibly drill a few holes in the factory bracket just large enough to fit the screws in to secure the h/u. A double din needs at least 4 screws to hold it in, 2 on each side, preferably 4 on each side (2 up top, 2 on the bottom of each side).

Are you sure you have a 1/2din pocket? The depth has nothing to do with it being full din or half, as I have a half length but still 1din pocket factory and was left with a half din hole. If you have a half din pocket your in luck as you can't buy them as far as my search went a couple years ago. I would leave the half din on the bottom (as that is where I am assuming that is where it is located) and fit the double din above it, theoretically you could get away with just the 2 screws on the double din if the pocket is secure and the h/u rests on it. In this situation I wouldn't bother with a fascia/mount kit.

If you have a 1din pocket, you could either cut it in half providing you could still mount it, I haven't looked at that aspect so am unsure of the mount locations. Or if that fails I would recommend 4 options for you.
1. Blank it off (if your pocket is a 1din then that piece of plastic would be a half din)
2. Find something in a half din that you like to use, eg. equalizer, make a hdd dock, etc
3. Find a NA8 (96 on from memory) tombstone
4. I can't remember where I saw it, but either miataroadster, moss, flying miata, mx5parts, or one of the like actually sells a fascia kit for the NA to convert to a clean single or double din

No matter what I don't see that double din kit helping a na6 owner

Just my 2c

Thanks for this, very helpful. Right now I think that my pocket might actually be a single din. It's a little thinner than my head unit in face size, but my single din head unit has a mounting kit around it so might make it look bigger. I guess what i'll do is cut that plastic fascia part to size to cover the 1/2 din hole underneath the head unit.

so if you have the early na6 tombstone, you can fit a single din cd player and one these cubbies.

which should close off the whole 2.5 din gap.

This is my Eunos 1990 NA6. as you can see it fits my double din headunit. the headunit came with a small frame as you can see between the headunit and the tombstone. it just stops you seeing the ugly bit. hope this helps
